So. Anyway.

This year's protocol:

1. Milk Thistle. At least a fortnight of daily placebos therapy.
2. Water. Lots of water.
3. Marmite. A Fuck-tonne of Marmite. All the Thiamine, as long as it's in Marmite form.
4. No Sugar. None. Not a grain. Half of table sugar is Fructose, which is liver-intensive.
5. Other glutathione enhancing ways.
6. Some fasting.
7. NSNG.
8. Other stuff too "wanky" to put here - and no, it's not wanking.

Gosh.  Coupled with Andrij's dry wit, that could be quite an evening.

I hope to be dry in January out of solidarity cos I'm not a drinker.

The months-old Merlot by the cooker will augment the odd Bolognese and we received some rather good Belgian chocolates, some of which contain liqueur but these are our exceptions.

I don't think they add up to much alcohol.

OK.  This dry January thing.  I'm up for that.  Could someone tell me which day in January it is, please?

The clue's in the thread title - it's the 2017th. Think you can manage that?

Haven't drunk anything alcoholic since one of our Leonbergs died in 1995*: my problem will be a thin January.

*go figure. I don't know either.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

I'm in. I really need to do something about the state of my health and cutting out alcohol will be a good start.

I'm in.  Gave up drinking in winter (except for a break at Christmas) 3 winters ago, so will be dry until Easter.  Much easier than giving up caffeine.

I'm in, with the proviso that I may well have the odd tipple if in the company of drinkers. I am anticipating that this will not be more than 3 times in the whole month.

Nearly a third of the way through January and holding fast. It's been surprisingly easy so far - largely thanks to a total lack of social life not putting temptation in my way.

I've also cut out caffeine after midday and I can already feel some beneficial effect on my sleep.

For me, it's the fourth consecutive Dry January since 2014. In a way, it's always surprisingly easy and enjoyable. After one week or so, I sleep better, and feel fresher in the morning. Will again try to carry it over into the coming months, although  my past track record in doing this is not great  The wish to shed a few more pounds in the run up to LEL may be an additional incentive...

A few months ago, I tried to restrict my caffeine intake, but failed miserably after a few days.

Went to the doctor this morning for the results of my blood tests. Scored high for some enzyme (probably AST but I can't remember) on the liver function test, apparently - classic sign of drinking too much. Not entirely surprised, just glad that all the other tests came back with more positive results (cholesterol level was in normal range, which was a pleasant surprise). Anyway, I'd call that a fairly good incentive to carry on with Dry January. Going back in a month for further tests to see if it has returned to normal.

I've been very good so far - had my first real test of will at the weekend when we visited family friends who tried to ply me with booze. I resisted. Had another social occasion yesterday - lunch with colleagues - and was expecting to turn up and find everyone on the beers, but in fact a few of them are also doing Dry January or are on fitness regimes, so we were all very good and abstemious, which made it easier.

Going out with friends on Friday evening for pub & curry. That's going to be a challenge.

GGT maybe? Mine was 650 ("Elevated" - was the word they used) I think, last time it was tested. It's a generic marker for a stressed liver.

So far so good for me - couple of mardy evenings when I was feeling hard-done-by, otherwise - fine.

Could be. When I got home, I looked online for details of liver function tests and found a list of enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT), I just can't remember which one the doc mentioned specifically, but he did say it was an enzyme (or maybe more than one). I'll ask next time I go back.

It's usually GGT that's associated with acute and chronic alcoholic liver disease..

I partook of wine on offer at a meeting on Monday just because It Was There.

I suppose it was my first drink of the year.
