I've signed up for Barnie for the duration, but can possi-probably also do the Fri/Sat/Sun am in Loughton as I did last time.  I can't see a way to multiple select on the website - do I just email?

We set multiple assigned controls our end. But weekend off LEL admin duties. Email as suggested and it'll get picked up. We do have a few helpers for Loughton but no harm in volunteering for the start weekend.

I'm possibly out  :-[  I crashed the trike on the Red Rose Audax and managed to break my shoulder  the consultant says reconstruction is not possible as the shoulder is in to many pieces though he has passed me on to a specialist so I will have to wait for a second opinion .

Have just done the hour by hour catering plan for St Ives on the Sunday, starting at 8am Saturday morning.  All looks practical based on last week's recce of the kitchen, and 3 range sized ovens going pretty much constantly.

Ouch, hope the specialist has better news.

Glad to read you have my nutrition sorted out, Crazy.  Now what are you going to do for the riders?

Plane and train booked for return from Stornoway to Carlisle. Mum's moving away from Brampton so I'll be in a hostel in Carlisle Sat and Wed night and at the control from Sunday 'til Wednesday.

I'm thinking of doing a la carte for the fast riders back as they could be coming in a handful an hour through Tuesday.  Set up a menu and an order form in the preceding control  :smug:   I now have an hour by hour plan for all of the busy periods and a food order that would take out most of a medium sized Tesco.  Starting to get excited about it.  Although it was knackering last time, a couple of weeks later I did probably my best ever 300 and the following weekend finished the Cambrian 4C, which is the hardest 400 I'll ever do, so it seemed to do a lot for my riding even though I just spent all my time on my feet.

A tip for those spending a lot of time working in kitchens.  Take a stool so you can take the weight off your feet.

Any plans for a St Ives preparation meet up/discussion ahead of things? I've not heard anything other than I'm in.

Busily working on rotas at present, Dave.  Hope to have a missive to all St Ives volunteers shortly.  No plans for a meet-up ahead of the Saturday (very difficult to organise with volunteers coming from all over), but will be sitting down with all volunteers there before we start.

Cheers Phil, I was just thinking how busy I am before the event, and whether I'd be able to get to anything.

I'll keep an eye on my inbox

Finally managed to talk CBH into letting me have a pass out so I am helping out at Spalding on the return leg.  ;D

Anyone know if we get much spare time as I quite like the idea of riding to St Ives and back so I can say that I have "done" the LEL...... well part of it at least!

 We'll see you there. I suspect the only free time will be between the North bound closure and South bound opening.

spare time
Nil. Possibly less than that. When the riders came in at Loughton last time I just wanted to help. Some were er, a bit tired. If you want to do that bit of the ride try to get it done before. Afterwards you'll be too tired.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

Based on my experience at Brampton last LEL there wasn't sufficient spare time to get a good sleep as there was always something to do that was directed toward helping those riding the event.

I too am at Spalding- I get the impression that it's going to be pretty much full-on! There may be a significant gap between the main groups of outbound and returning riders, so that might be your opportunity?

I was originally at Pocklington for the duration but I am now driving one of the support vans clocking lots of miles up and seeing much of the countryside and all of the controls I think!

Jim - Spalding controller here.
Sorry to join the conversation late. Its good to hear from all the volunteers - especially the Spalding ones :-)

There will definitely be time to ride on the Monday, and early on on the Tues. Maybe all day.
If u wanted to ride on the wed or Thurs - u guys r volunteers, we're nor going ro tell u what u can and cant do. If u wanted to take a break and have a ride, no one will say u cant. It might even do u good to clear your head.
There will be a lot to do at Spalding on sun and wed, Thurs........
All volunteered time is very much appreciated. Thanks

Not a lot of spare time at Barney either - northbound and southbound overlap so we're busy from Sunday night to end of Wednesday.

But as Jim says, we can hardly withhold your wages if you slip off for a couple of hours.

Hi Jim and team.

Just to confirm, I am attending to help in whatever way I can and whilst popping out to knock out a few miles would be nice, the needs of the riders is my first concern! As to the highlights of Spalding, I have been there four times on business so really,  I was just trying to make a little joke.

Finally, having managed 60 volunteers when I ran a Citizens Advice Bureau, I know how difficult it can be! Its a bit like herding cats but without the fleas and the occasional purr.   ;D

See you there: really looking forward to it.
