11-36 11speed cassette
« on: 20 April, 2017, 08:17:20 am »
A chap came into the LBS where I work p/t to enquire about lowering his gearing and asked about the possibility of an 11-36 cassette instead of his 11-32 (double at the front 50/?))

Some research revealed that SRAM does an 11-36 that's compatible with the freewheel he has AND that it will work with a Shimano 105 long-arm mech (with a new chain which he needs anyway) - looking at the mech (105 long) he has and adjusting the stop it looks as if it would work.

Does anyone have direct experience of such a set up please?

11-40 11 sp on my M5 recumbent, but paired with MTB rear mech and shifter.  Road compact double up front and no issues.

I'm using a SRAM 36T cassette with an otherwise Ultegra compact setup, with a Wolf Tooth RoadLink on a Trek Domane - it works fine.

I understand it's possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9q4WpaqwgI

I've only tried the SRAM 11-36 with a bodged MTB mech (which worked, but wasn't great), but I've got a RoadLink waiting to go on next time I give the 11-36 a whirl (which may be a while, as there aren't really any hills steep enough for such things round here!).

The customer has decided to go with it . . . but the SRAM cassette is out of stock until about 5 May!  Looks like the trick in the YouTube film turning the B-screw around to push the mech even further back will ensure that it works.

I shall report back in due course

Why not use a Shimano mtb cassette - slx is available in 11-36 and will fit with a spacer.

i've experimented with 105 long mech and it worked up to 34t; for 36t my mech hanger had to be ~3mm longer. it will vary on different bikes.

inverting the b-screw will make the chain more prone to skipping as there will be fewer chain links engaged with sprocket teeth.

SLX 11-36 cassette is 10 speed only,  11 speed is 11-40.

Beat me to it - we looked through all the available 11 speed 11-36 cassettes and it seems that only SRAM make one.

I've got an 11-40 with an Ultegra medium cage mech + Road Link.
Works fine.

Yep. I've used the Road link with an Ultegra mech (long cage I think) an 11-40 XT cassette and it worked just fine.

Oops,  rain is in 10 speed world at the moment. Hopefully I'll get my old 7900 short age emch working with 11-36 using a roadlink in a 1x10 setup in time for Deano's off road Audax next week. If not, it's going to be 12-30 with a 38 tooth front

I've just put on an 11-36 SRAM cassette on a Shimano 105 5800 medium cage derailleur with no Road Link or crazy B Screw shenanigans. It seems to work fine.

I am running a 1x setup (40t), so there's fewer gear combinations to worry about adjusting for.
