My reason for doing the night ride (Dartmoor Ghost) is purely for the that reason: It's at night. I like riding at night because of the change in 'feeling' of the ride. It smells and sounds different and different portals and levels of awareness peak. It's wrong which makes it right.

I did the "Ghost" last year and found it more challenging than any 200 I've done for reasons that I can't readily explain.  The visibility wasn't great and the sensation of being pulled back on ascents you couldn't see was pretty spooky!
Most of the stuff I say is true because I saw it in a dream and I don't have the presence of mind to make up lies when I'm asleep.   Bryan Andreas

Doing my first 200 this year (have already done several 100s and two 150s) and it's a fairly hilly one.

I'm usually 'slow and steady' on sustained climbs but am I right in thinking that my average speed shouldn't be too much lower than on a flat ride if I take the descents confidently (and safely?)

I am also a bit of a plodder.  Generally I find that the hillier the ride the longer it takes me to complete the distance.
Lots of Audaxes use minor country roads where you cant allways go flat out on the descents.

Just signed up to do my first 200km. The Herts High Five

Is that an Audax event?  I can't find it on the Calendar.
