Taunton to Axminster?
« on: 14 May, 2017, 09:28:05 pm »
Heading from Minehead towards Charmouth campsite with full touring kit on the bikes.
What's the A358 like, looks like it's likely to be the flattest route but is it to busy to cycle on?
Mind you we are heading along the coast towards Southampton so all the roads are likely to be busyish.

I'm sure Ian will be along in a minute...

I'd follow the B3170 Corfe road out of Taunton, right at T onto the A303 for a couple of km, then left after the A30 junction onto the ridge road over Stockland hill. You can follow that all the way to the A35 just outside Axminster.  No chevrons, and not too many climbs (bit of a grunter after Corfe, if memory serves)

Peter's route would work.  Would be a faff choosing a good route past Axminster.

If you don't want to climb Corfe, you can route via Stoke St Mary, Slough Green, Bickenhall, Broadway.  South of the A303, the A358 is okay.  Between there and Taunton it's not pleasant.

At Chard you could take the B3120 to Winsham and route through Marshwood Vale to Charmouth—scenic in the best way.

Thanks, I'll have a look
We're heading for the C+CC site at Monkton Wyld then along the coast a bit.
