Sadly, my only recollection of seeing him play was when he was sent off. I understand that he spent a lot of time coaching Martin Johnson when he played for the Young All Blacks.

My fave Meads anecdote concerned a young Scottish lock on his debut, playing and jumping against the great man. He confided to his team mates at half time that every time he went into a lineout, Meads would tell him what he intended to do to him next time he caught him on the ground.

The rest of the Scots asked what he had said back to Meads.

"Och, I just telt him tae bugger off"

"Good on ye, lad"

"Aye. But I hae tae admit... I didnae say it very loudly"
