10 speed vs 11 speed chain rings
« on: 20 August, 2017, 05:00:12 pm »
I an considering a new chain set for my 11 speed bike and have always got on with TA rings. There is an 11 speed specific called Syrius and the 8, 9 and 10 speed zepher. There is a tiny difference in the chain dimensions for 10 and 11 speed. So could I use Zepher rings with 11 speed. Struggling to thing that the tiny width difference will make a difference.

So will Zepher TA rings work with 11 speed?

at some point there will be a problem for sure.  11s chains are a little bit narrower than 10s ones.

One failure mode is that the chain skates on top of the small chainring rather than sits on it; whether you get that will depend on lots of things including whether the chainset has spider arms that are slightly thicker than the norm (for 10s/11s ones) or not.

it'll probably work OK, but there is only one way to find out...

cheers

Externally, yes.

But internally 10 and 11 (and 9) speed are the same width.
