Day 1
London-Penzance-Lands End-Penzance
Miles: 30 miles

After a couple of hellish weeks at work, combined with last minute
preparation and planning, it is fair to say I was totally shattered when I
left my flat in Docklands this morning.

I was up super early, probably a combination of nerves and excitement. Did
a last minute check, had a panic, checked more stuff, panicked again. This
carried on for some time. Jurek was a calming influence and I eventually
realised I would have to stop faffing and get on my bike and go to
Paddington to get my train.

Having stripped my bike of mudguards and rack last year, they all had to go
back on. The bike was re-fettled last weekend (concurrently with wine
consumption) and stupidly I hadn't had a chance to take it for a spin
before setting off.

Thankfully, it was all fine and apart from getting wet, we had an
uneventful journey to Paddington. I  hope that's it rainwise (yeah right).
The bike ran very smoothly and as soon as I was in the saddle, I calmed
down a bit :) I'm glad I'm travelling light with only 8kg of stuff in two
small panniers.

Jurek helped me load the bike on the train, which was suspended from the
roof of the guards van - it looked quite wobbly :o and off I went to find
my seat. I made myself all comfy to settle in for the journey. And then
realised I was in the wrong seat   Got myself re-settled, Jurek
waved me off and then after some cake and a snooze, I woke up in time to
look out of the window in Liskeard to see the hilly countryside. I'd heard
about these hills. They looked brutal. I tried not to think about it too
much as I went back to sleep, waking up a few hours later in Penzance.

As I exited the station in Penzance, in contrast to London it was sunny and
warm. What is also different is the hills. As I went down my first one I
thought to myself "I'm not looking forward to climbing that on the way
back". As it turns out, that one was easy in contrast. But, I'm not in a
rush and so I dropped onto the granny and slowly grinded my way up and went
whooshing down the other side. And up. And down. And up. And down. But it
was fine. My bike felt good and so did my legs and when I got out of the
saddle it didn't feel too wobbly with the panniers.

I got overtaken by a bunch of JOGLErs on the way up a hill. But I didn't
mind - they were all travelling without luggage or even so much as a
mudguard or rack between them. I went zooming past on my way down :D

I got to Lands End and watched the JOGLErs arrive. They popped open some
champagne and I opened a banana ;D I took a few photos and then got back on
my bike and headed back to Penzance and am now in a restaurant with a beer
and big plate of gnocchi.

Day 2

Penzance to Camelford
Miles: was supposed to be 60 but ended up being 65

As I ate my brekkie this morning, Nigel the B&B owner chatted to me about
my bike and my route. Another one who warned me about the hills!!!!

I was on the road and out of Penzance by 9am. I exited on the A30 to Hayle.
It wasn't a very nice road - fast and busy. I jumped on the path on the
side which I think may have been pedestrian only. I know - norty- but it
seemed like the most sensible thing to do. I joined the B3301 had a quick
chain drop and then after Hayle I joined a nice quiet lane which was a
fantastic road and the descent out of Connor Down made me grin like a loon.

After the brief enjoyment on some quiet roads I was back on the A3047. I
was just thinking how much I'd like a cup of tea when in the haze of
exhaust fumes I spotted Smokey Joes truckstop. I had a tea and a banana and
a sit down and congratulated myself on my progress so far. The hills hadn't
been that bad.

I pressed on up the A3075 into caravan site heaven. Another fast road :(  I
was starting to get a bit peckish and thankfully I spotted some signs for
"good food ahead" and decided it was too good an opportunity to miss so
pulled into the Braefel Inn. They were only doing full roast dinners which
in the heat wasn't really what I was after. The landlady let me have a
kiddies menu pizza and chips instead ;D I sat outside and watched the world
go by and then the wasps came. Anyone who has seen me around a wasp will
know what came next....let's just say I ended up prancing around the
carpark....

Just after lunch I was back onto small lanes again which was a relief. I
was half way through the day and was wondering what the hill fuss was
about. And then I had my first taste of cornish hills on my way out of St
Newlyn East. I got a bit glowy so decided that it was time for the world to
see my lycra clad legs, which so far had been kept concealed under some 3/4
baggies. Thankfully at this point the world consisted of a few flies ;D

My peaceful country lane enjoyment quickly came to an end when I joined the
A39. This was really not very nice at all. I noticed a lane running
parallel on my garmin so jumped on that. It lasted about 500m :( so I did
what all good cyclists in distress do - I called home and asked Jurek to
suggest me an alternative route. Between us we found a B road and then some
lanes which would take me to Wadebridge. Jurek warned me it was hilly. And
it was. But it wasn't that bad. I thought I was a rubbish climber but I got
up everything, albeit slowly. What I am though is a complete scaredy cat
when it comes to descending. On the chevron'd descent I was glad of my new
brakes.

And then came the big climb to the wind farm. I flew up this. Not because I
was feeling sprightly but because I was surrounded by a million flies.
ARGH!!! I flicked my pony tail around to try and get them to sod off but
they wouldn't leave me alone. I had my first tourettes moment. The only way
I could get rid of them was to get up the hill. And fast.

And then I was at the highest point of the day. At this point I was about
13 miles from camelford and feeling good. But with 7 miles to go I felt
exhausted. At Wadebridge I went off route again rather than the A39.
Everything was starting to ache. Every hill was a chore. I had also found
going off route mentally quite difficult. I stopped and glugged back some
water and ate a cereal bar thingy and just put my head down and pedalled. I
didn't look up - seeing hills was too demoralising.

And then suddenly I was back en route with only 2.5 km to go to the end. I
perked up considerably and arrived at my B&B where Sarah the owner welcomed
me in, sorted out my bike, brought me milk for tea which I drank
immediately rather than bothering with the tea bit and gave me a fluffy
robe. I had the best shower with the softest towels and felt much better. I
wandered down to the local pub where the landlady, upon spotting me sat me
down at the bar and watched me a neck a J2O so made me a special "thirst
quencher" which was fab. I was craving carbs so had leek and potato soup
with homemade bread followed by lasagne with garlic bread. Mmmmmm. Bread.
Nomnomnom.

And now I am back at my B&B and thinking about getting some sleep. The B&B
is amazing and comes highly recommended (Warmington House).

I'm intrigued to know how much climbing I did today cos I'm sure going off
the main route bumped it up. And it was already one of the highest total
ascent days! :O

Thankfully a shorter day tomorrow with, hopefully, fewer hills and hardly
any busy roads :)

I didn't want to say anything this morning but didn't you also have a headwind today? Well done anyway, sounds like a good start to the ride. Enjoy tomorrow.

Day 3
Camelford to Crediton
Miles: 55 fantastic miles

First of all - thanks for all the replies and messages of support. They
mean a lot.

Secondly - yes toekneep - I also had a headwind yesterday ;D

Anyhoo....here is today's instalment.....

That was a bloomin great day. The weather was superb and I had a great rest
in Camelford. After a fab brekkie I set off on my way and by 9am I had made
the climb out. My legs were screaming at me to stop, but they just hadn't
warmed up.

I had a quick chain drop as I twiddled up the hill, this time inwards when
changing down to my granny ring. I popped it back on (must buy more placcy
gloves) and shortly turned off the main road.

From that point I was treated to some fab lanes and for the whole way to
Launceston I only saw about 3 cars. It was fantastic cycling and felt like
it was all down hill.

I had a quick banana break and the lady in the grocery store wished me well
on my way and told me I was very brave :D

Instead of going through Launceston I skirted round the edge and when I saw
how high up the castle was I knew I'd made the right decision as I was
treated again to lovely lanes. I rejoined the main road and as I started
the climb out I saw the sign "you are now entering Devon". So bye bye
Cornwall. I have to say that psychologically this was a great boost as I
felt like I was making progress.

The hills had turned much shallower but longer and I just took it easy and
twiddled up them. Occasionally I got a toot toot from some of the HGVs and
I assume (and will not let anyone tell me otherwise) that these were meant
encouragingly and not a "get outta my way" ;)

As I approached the peak of the hill at Lewdown I saw in front of me gert
big grey lump that looked particularly menacing. Dartmoor. In my head the
big percussion drums were drumming. Dum dum dum.

I cycled on to Okehampton and stopped for a quick bite at Sourton services
- another truck stop - who did me a great sarnie and tea and then through
Okehampton itself. I then climbed and climbed out of Okehampton. As I got
to the top of the hill I stopped for a quick drink and noticed there was a
warning sign saying 15% for 3/4 mile. And I'd just cycled up that and was
barely out of breath. Hills? Pah. I laugh in your face.

I pressed on and suddenly I was heading for the gert big lump! WAH! I kept
on but found that I skirted round it pretty much. The views were fantastic.
On my right the menacing moors, on my left the A30 way below. The miles
fell away and soon enough I was through Cheriton Bishop and turning towards
Crediton.

I was on super thin lanes with very high foliage and really hoped I
wouldn't come across any cars. I was faced with what I can only describe as
a wall. I dropped the gears and up I went. I thought I might have to walk
but my legs were being remarkably compliant and got me to the top without
so much as a twinge. The down bits was one of those blind hills where you
can't actually see how steeply it drops off. I thought at this point that
skis might be a better weapon of choice than a bike. And so the
rollercoaster up and down continued all the way to my B&B in Crediton.

Sylvia welcomed me in and put my bike away and then made me a cup of tea.
I've mended the zip in the pocket of my baggy 3/4's AND stitched up the bit
on the crutch that was falling apart. So a very productive day overall ;D

Sylvia has assured me that the most difficult days are now done. Apparently
I get about 7 difficult miles first thing and then it is flat flat flat to
Axbridge. Pretty much. Jurek is joining me in Axbridge tomorrow evening to
cycle with me on Wednesday so that is great. I've enjoyed my "me" time but
am looking forward to some company.

Good luck Pippa - and keep the reports coming in.

We went through Okehampton and I remember recording our highest ever speed somewhere near there - but that record was broken several times before we reached JOG.

I'm sure Pippa will be along later with a ride report

I'll just say that I collected she & Jurek from Tewdric's last night and have them captured at escorted them to Chateau Volio.

I managed to ride into a hedge on the way, but that's a different story :)
