50 adventures - ideas please!
« on: 21 December, 2018, 10:55:42 pm »
I’ll turn 50 this week so I’m plotting 50 micro adventures for next year and look upon your collective kindness for some ideas. Setting the scene, I have two youngish kids so can’t go gallivanting on many long expeditions without them, and money is limited so new activities which can involve the family are a bonus. Things I’ve commited to already:
Run my first marathon, run a half marathon in sub 2 hrs, have a solo overnight bikepacking trip (to the seaside), organise a midsummer camping party in the garden for all my nieces and nephews, take the kids up the tallest hill in Hampshire, visit 5 beaches we’ve not been to before, wild swimming etc.

Further inspiration required please. Spoon carving perhaps...

Go and see a crackin' good murmuration, with associated bikes + camping.

Same for Persieds and/or Severn Bore.

Do they still have all the bird hides along the Test estuary? Kayaking along the Beaulieu River? Something else at Calshot Activities Centre? Something Arthurian-themed around Winchester? Go to the records office at Winchester, look at a really old map of your home area and go and find The Interesting Thing?

Sounds like a great idea and this could be a really inspiring thread. Some initial thoughts - and you may have done all these already!

Do an Audax you've always wanted to do, but haven't yet...
Do a coast to coast with the children (pick an appropriate island with a suitable distance)
I second the idea of the perseid meteor shower - take hot chocolate, blankets, etc
Track Velodrome taster session
steward/marshall/support a local event
support a charity ride/run by manning their cheering station with the family
Park Run volunteering is great for children
Help out/ man a control for an Audax event

Have a look at Al Humphries Microadventures book for some great ideas

Take the kids orienteering in a national park.
Get a bicycle. You will never regret it, if you live- Mark Twain

The Meeks family are ace and there is a host of ideas on their website, and accompanying books. You should get your children to write up each adventure from their perspective

Fossil Hunting at Barton on Sea:
Kids receive a series of devious clues which, when solved, reveal the location of Dad and a picnic. Thence continue to the beach to look for shark teeth.

Something involving the Ridgeway.
Something involving the Stonehenge landscape.
Something involving all the ferries between Hythe and Hayling Island.
Day trip to Portland Bill.
Something involving Salisbury Plain.
Climb the spire of Salisbury Cathedral.

Thanks for the ideas so far, keep them coming. Some really great ideas.

I did the Newbury Parkrun this morning and hopefully MicroQ will be old enough to do it with me some time next year. Volunteering is also a good one, though Mrs Q works Saturdays so I have the kids which makes it trickier. A mate volunteered this morning to pace me for a sub 2 hr half marathon so that helps that goal along a bit.

Definitely adding some of your ideas to the list.

Outdoor conservation type volunteering as a family - beach clean, plant trees, clear scrub land (and have bonfires). Try National Trust, Woodland Trust or local organisations
Go on a bat walk, or other night time expedition

Climb the 50 tallest trees within 50 miles of home.
Swim in 50 rivers.
Visit Belas Knap or whatever you have nearby. (I did meet some people who had a microadventure – before the term had been invented – overnight in West Kennet long barrow, not far from Stonehenge, but I'm not sure that should be recommended.)
Find 50 abandoned airfields and ride on them, if practicable, or try to spot the runways on the ground.
Visit all the shire stones, where county boundaries meet.
Riding a concrete path through the nebulous and chaotic future.

Updates so far we have:
* family one night winter camp in the New Forest (Mrs Q and the kids)
* run up the highest point in Hants (Pilot Hill) and SE England (Walbury Hill)  - me only
* family walk up Beacon Hill
Booked a winter camp (me and Mrs Q) in March
Booked a family summer "festival" in the garden with our family and mates.  Never done that before.
