I’m happy to report that it tastes just like Marmite

Is the normal stuff veggie?

Yes, only ingredients are vegetarians, no carnivores are hurt during production :-D

I have a feeling the normal (yellow label) stuff already has less salt than in days of yore.

Yes. Marmite and chopped nuts was what my lifelong veggie mother was given in sandwiches by relatives who previously had no idea that options other than corned beef or fishpaste existed. She'll be 80 next year and had a vegetarian ration book in the war.

I acquired a jar of the same, tasted it and thought "if that's what it tastes like with 25% less salt, it clearly had no need of it"

What is reduced salt? Is it something you find in Hoxton?
It is simpler than it looks.

But yeast aren't a vegetable, so I don't think they can claim it's vegetarian. They're single-celled fungi. They might have feelings.

It's a different kingdom. As closely related to plants as we are (actually, in many ways they're more closely related to animals).

It's found on the same shelf as free gluten.

I don't understand people who can't taste the difference between sodium chloride and potassium chloride.  (I mean, it's fine, but it's a distinctly different flavour).  They're probably smokers or something.

Note that the Lo Salt can lead to <thread crossing alert> "cretinism". But probably won't... especially if you aren't pregnant...

What is the KCl content of the blue lid stuff?

Would this be hazardous to those with kidney problems or of potassium-sparing diuretics?

Seems the ingredients are exactly the same, just less salt added. So I don't think there's any more KCl than the regular Marmite.

You can get Meridian yeast extract with no added salt, though it has a rather different taste.

I'm never convinced simply exchanging lots of sodium for lots of potassium is a great idea, for lots of reasons. If you're worried about salt, eat less salty stuff.
