In Hampshire we have safe2eat
There used to be a website for Basingstoke that had the full investigation reports - so you could see that the inspectors found dead rats under the freezers or whatever. Even some newly built and nice looking places had nasty problems (though they tended to be poor food management - e.g. having mouldy cakes around).

I've been in very clean restaurants and served awful food.

A rule of thumb is that the best curry comes from the foulest establishments, with dank toilets, peeling wallpaper and lighting so low that you can't see what you're treading in.

Seriously, we've just picked the venue for a works meal out based on this - there are two Mexican restaurants in Swindon, of which La Casa scored 0/5 and Chiquito's (yeah, a chain, I know) scored 5/5.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

There's a pub near here which was closed down recently because of the rats (both live & dead) in the kitchen. After a clean-up & some work to prevent rats getting in, it's re-opened, but the ratings show -

Food safety star rating - 0
Comments - major improvements required
Confidence in management - no
Hygiene & safety - poor
Structural - poor

I want to know if that's the rating it was allowed to re-open with.

The Wetherspoons a couple of hundred yards from that pub gets -
Food safety star rating - *****
Comments - Excellent
Confidence in management - High
Hygiene & safety - Very good
Structural - Good

Both quite OK food though.  Chiquito's surprisingly good given its chain status

Yes, I was wondering how quickly the places are reassessed following a 'fail', or how quickly the website info is updated.  You'd almost think that the best time to go might be after a bad rating, because the management would have to improve things... Then again, many ratings state very low confidence in the management, so perhaps things don't always improve that much.
