Breakfast without cereals..?
« on: 10 June, 2011, 11:10:04 am »
Any good ideas for a wholesome breakfast that doesn't involve breakfast cereals? Older mini ao (13) doesn't eat them, though will manage porridge/readybrek occasionally.  Quite often it's a slice of white toast with marge and an enforced satsuma or apple...  :-\

I often have peanut butter and banana sandwiches, albeit only on days when I'll be riding in to work1 - failing that, I generally go for a couple of pieces of fruit (usually a banana and an apple or orange) or make myself a smoothie or similar (a handy use for banananananas that are past their best). And tea/coffee, of course.

I do eat cereals, but a change is as good as a rest.

1 - I'm diabetic, so such things only feature in my diet if I'm actively exercising. Otherwise, YMMV.

Any combination of:

Flapjack
Eggs various
Dried fruit salad
Smoothies
Nuts, seeds and berries

I don't see what the problem is with eating rice, pasta and other less traditional breakfast foods first thing in the morning.  If you don't like cereals, then a good bowl of some other stodge is what you need to kickstart your system and fuel you through the early part of the day...

Fruit with yoghurt. I use sultanas, strawberries, banana and tinned/bottled peaches and grapefruit (in juice rather than syrup).  I have them over shredded wheat, but you could add them to weetabix or porrage. Or not.

And why an "enforced" piece of fruit? That won't really help them become popular. As long as other fibre (from veg, salads etc.) is in the diet then they aren't absolutely necessary - though welcome I agree.

Re rice for breakfast - my stepson holiday in India - he did say curry for breakfast got a bit much after three weeks - but then so (for me) did "full English" when in extended B&B stays. YMMV but a good veg curry with brown rice makes a cracking breakfast on occaision.

If she doesn't like wholemeal bread, try something like this:

Hovis Best Of Both Medium White 800G - Groceries - Tesco Groceries

EDIT: Have an egg with it to get the protein.

Smoothies can be delicious, so keep trying different ones if they're not liked at first.

Absolutely - back in the days when I actually rode Audax calendar events, cold pizza was my breakfast of choice  ;D

I make porridge every morning using own-brand oats and soya milk. No wheat, no dairy, muchly lovely. I make it in a pan, but a microwave is probably easier for a single portion (I don't own one but I have used this method).

I don't see what the problem is with eating rice, pasta and other less traditional breakfast foods

"Traditional" here means cereals with milk, I assume? Go anywhere in the world that isn't the USA or the UK (as I know you have) and you won't see much of this :).

Boiled/poached egg (possibly accompanied by toast) + piece of fruit.

There is sound evidence that feeding children protein before school helps with concentration at school.

Observations on breakfast cereals  -  have a look at the amount of sugar in each - frightening amounts.
Cereals are heavily marketed as being "healthy"  -its just marketing. They're highly processed foods, which must have a huge profit margin.
And look at the added vitamins claims - as far as I know this was mandatory, as breakfast cereals would have no vitamins at all. Advertising turns a necessity into a plus point - and we swallow it (pun intended).

Having said all of the above, I breakfast on Lizis Granola every morning. Low GI, no added sugar at all, and its quite delicious. Its the antithesis of the highly processed wheat in other breakfast cereals.

Talking about protein though - kippers are very cheap. Don't see a 13 year old eating them voluntarily though!
Bacon sarnies on the other hand....

You could even put an egg on it.

Make more than you normally would of supper and he can have the leftovers. Works fine here (though Little Cudzo is a fan of a weetabix-shreddies-snapple crackle popple combo).

I'd also suggest eggs. I am not an egg-y person, but I started eating boiled eggs during our recent Denmark tour and discovered they fuel me far better than cereal.

Alternatively, you could try offering her a Danish pavement.

Orange juice
Fresh fruit salad
Yoghurt
Toast & preserves
Croissants

My Mum never has cereal for breakfast and does not seem to suffer; she'd eat most of the above but not the yoghurt.

Israeli breakfast:
Bread & crackers
Fresh salad veg: cucumber tomato pepper etc
'White cheese' (low-fat quark)/ Cottage cheese/ Boursin-like soft cheese/ hard cheese
Fresh fruit, especially watermelon
Yoghurt

Really, there must be something in the kitchen you daughter will eat; it doesn't really matter what she eats, though she should eat before school. If she fancies left-overs from last night's supper, so be it. No harm will result.
I would not fret.

Toast and marmite, toast and a banana, toast and peanut butter, beans on toast. Bacon roll. Boiled egg and soldiers. Scrambled egg on toast. Muesli and yoghurt or milk with fruit. Oatcakes and topping of choice.

I'd eat watermelon for breakfast too if I was that size and in a nice hot sunny park or garden.

Also, that clip makes me really glad I've got my new internet connection - it's so much faster than the old one, video plays really smoothly.  :)

<Aside - is Danielush a "proper" Hebrew name or is it a diminutive? Little Cudzo, who seems to be reminded of himself at that age, says "they should call him Pastush!" The -ush ending works as a soft diminutive in Polish - in fact I use it for him!>
