Ooh, sod the book, tell us more about the bikes.  ;D
Well, Woolly wants a Surly Long Haul Trucker, and I am yet to decide what I would like. Perhaps I will take myself down to Roberts...  :D

Anyone have any ideas? (Cue: deluge.)  ;)

Give us a run down on what the current stable is, and what it is you want to do, and I guess every niche will be suggested very quickly.

Buy a Roberts but see if you can have the frame painted by somebody who knows how to apply paint that sticks.    ;)

Buy A Roberts but have it painted by Bob Jackson.   That way you'd get the best of both worlds.   :demon:

Don't go to Vaz.  His paint job was rubbish too.    :(    I should have realised by the cost.   And he cannot follow basic type-written instructions.

Hmm, I might just get another Surly... I know that I like them, and that they fit me.

Well, they do seem to have a very good reputation for building bikes that are comfortable for people that are, er, less tall.

I went for a look before I bought the Van Nicholas. As PB has indicated the paint leaves something to be desired - even the frames on display in the shop had clear defects such as runs and fingerprints.

But definitely well worth a look, Peli  :)

Some of the frames were very light too.

Hmm, I might just get another Surly

Comfort is the main thing.

Beaten to it by PB. I wove my Woberts.

Van Nick do a very pretty Ti bike with a Rohloff - the Amazon, I think (not that I'm implying anything at all you understand).

Oh, maybe it is due to our colder habitats Mrs P?

I don't think that I could get a better made, better fitting bike than my Roberts.  It was like an old friend from the moment I started to ride it and has got even better with use.   The poor quality of the paint finish though really did ruin the experience for me.   My replacement will be a made to measure ti frame using the measurements gathered painstakingly from the Roberts.

Oh, and well done Peli.  Well earned reward.

I'm going nowhere near Ti again after the Omega/Enigma experience. Irrational, perhaps.

Is it possible to simply get a frame from Roberts, and have it painted elsewhere?

Edit: thanks PB! And I hope that stress levels will be reduced in future...

Agreed.

Treat yourself to custom steel: you've tried the titanium, and you've got the carbon.

Hmm, I seem to recall Clare and Vern saying that the paint job was disappointingly fragile on their Hewitts. Having said that, so is the one on my Dave Yates, maybe there is no such thing a tough paint job on a bike frame.

And even I have to admit that I wouldn't have minded another coat on my Orbit (Bob Jacksons paint).

I understand the reluctance to go with Ti again.  You want a bike you can be happy and comfortable with.  Surly are reliable and good-looking frames, so why not?

A couple of people I have ridden with have both had Hewitts built and find them fantastic ,I bought my bike from him it was a ready made frame but the painstaking approach he took to ensuring that everything else fitted in around it was admirable .He is a bit grumpy sometimes but that normal for lancastrians.

There's a little place in Derby you may have heard of that knock out the odd riding iron, and their paint jobs have a good reputation. Bit of a waiting list though.
