.

Hello all,

The next edition of the 1400 km Land's End to John o' Groats (LEJOG) is now published in the AUK Calendar, so here's a few practical details:

EVENT:

LEJOG 1400 km at Randonneur standard in July next year.

Distance: 1400 - 1435 km
Ascent: 14500 metres
Category: LRM (Les Randonneurs Mondiaux)

THE START

Date: Sunday 28 July 2024
Start: Land's End, Cornwall, England at 07:00 am prompt
Finish: John o' Groats, Highland, Scotland (before 03:40 am on Friday 02 August 2024)!

OVERVIEW

Land’s End to John o’ Groats (LEJOG) is the traversal of the whole length of the island of Great Britain – a long standing route from the southwestern tip to the north-eastern tip of the UK; from Cornwall through the Cotswolds; Wales; the Scottish lowlands, and finishing off in the Scottish Highlands – a windswept land of glacial lakes and an economy of trees. A succession of different terrains, architecture, and history.

The LEJOG will start at the headland of Land's End, Cornwall, the far south-western corner of the UK mainland and will finish at the village of John o' Groats, Scotland, the far north-eastern corner of the UK mainland. Route doesn’t follow the most direct route between the start & finish but will pass through England; Wales & Scotland!

Riders will be expected to maintain a minimum cycling average speed of 12 kph including anytime spent off the bike.

Controls will be placed at roughly 50-mile intervals but 4 of the controls, which we hope riders will use overnight, will have adequate shower & sleeping facilities.

Drop bag to 2 of the overnight controls, an opportunity for riders to collect clean clothes etc will help ensure everyone makes it through this randonnee. Your drop-bags will later be transferred to John o’ Groats ready for collection on arrival.

Each and every rider will need to make their own way to the start at Land’s End and home from John o’ Groats afterwards.

THE ROUTE

The route has more or less been finalised but there'll doubtless be some revisions beforehand. The route is essentially split into 5-stages, ridden over 4/5 days:

Stage 1: Land's End to Weston-Super-Mare  (300 km)

Stage 2: Weston-Super-Mare to Warrington (288 km)

Stage 3: Warrington to Peebles (301 km)

Stage 4: Peebles to Grantown-on-Spey (252 km)

Stage 5: Grantown-on-Spey to John o' Groats (250 km)

All the above distances are of course provisional and might vary slightly as we continue to build the event, although they won't wildly change! You do not have to sleep at the overnight controls and are free to push on if you so wish! A couple of other Controls, offering limited sleeping/eating facilities are also planned.

The intermediate controls will use commercial facilities. Drop-bag will be available to 2 of overnight Controls.

Exciting! Very interested in this, and I hear on the grape vine some of my RUSA friends are looking this way with interest too :)

Nice to see you'll be taking the eastern Cairngorms route, very similar to what our group did this summer (7x200 format) based on great feedback on this forum

small note - the AUK calendar event is not (yet) marked as "Mandatory route". Probably worth doing this, if the website is correct in saying that it is. (And at 1km over distance, I can't see how it couldn't be ... 🤣 )

There’s no upper entry limit but we’ll carry out checks and re-check control size requirements every 50 entrants or so.

More details under the FAQ section on the event website at:

I've also uploaded a few photos taken from the 2022 edition over the last few days which can be found here:

Good luck if you do decide to enter - it's more than a bike ride!

The much delayed but should be open soon NCN33 tarmaced link between Weston and Clevedon across the new Tutshill Sluice cycle bridge across the Yeo will be worth considering when the route on Day 2 is designed (if Weston is the end Day 1 control). Will save the slog up the A370 main road to the Strawbeery Line.

I might actually be able to make this (just need to find out when someone's birthday party is and wangle some leave) and I do still have unfinished business with LEJOG. Would be good to try a somewhat less "A-roady" version of one of the world's most well known point to points.
