300km or 200km versions, lots of AAAs available.  Superb little lanes and great views across the Peak District.  Anyone else riding?

Living as I do, a rather convenient 209km from the start, I had been planning to ride the 200 as the middle section of a DIY 600.

But speaking to Mike Wigley yesterday (an unlikely entrant on the Stevenage 200 - riding in Jeans!) who is a controller on the 300 - these rides sound a bit fierce for me, when embedded in a 600 like that; after all, I've only ever ridden one 600 before.

I might be tempted by the 200 on its own though.

Very tempted by the 300 - but would mean 2 Saturdays off as I'm also tempted by the Worcestershire and South Cotswold 300.

It is fierce - no doubt.  There's an awful lot of climbing on the 300.  Don't let that put you off though because it'll be a superb ride.  There's still the offer of a bed at mine if you want to ride the 300.

They're both challenging rides, there's no doubt, but pretty much every climb rewards you with a fantastic view at the top.

What's more, the first and final 50km of both rides are both gentle and rolling. The last section in particular is a most agreeable pootle through good quality country lanes.

My friend Ness is going to make gingerbread bicycles for everyone to munch on at Ashbourne. Though personally, I favour a visit to the chippy next door to the control before cake.

I'm not doing the audax, but am likely to be in the same area that day.

If you see a guy on a loaded tourer then say hello. That'll be me.
Don't ask.

The entries are trickling in nicely now. The 300 is proving to be more popular than the 200, which doesn't really surprise me.

Those of you of have survived, nay thrived, the Bryan Chapman, would love the scenery to be had on this event.

I believe the 300 goes to Holmfirth, when do you expect the riders to arrive there ? Where is the control ? I may wheel out there and say hello.

It does indeed. The control is at the newly refurbished Riverside Cafe on Hollowgate. Mike Wigley will be staffing the control, which is open between midday and 5pm. I'm sure he'd appreciate a visit.

Excellent, Mike is a VC167 clubmate of mine and a fine fellow. I haven't seen him since before I crashed so I shall contact him and go along to lend a hand if I can.

I might have been tempted by the 200, but I'll be coming back from my hols in Norfolk that day.

Is there a route anywhere?

Nice route, but having to go to Brum...  :(

I will probably keep the route and adapt it to ride from Nottingham. I know quite a few of the sections, where I go to play.

Yes there is. It's at http://www.danialwebb.com/midlander.html

You don't really go to or from Birmingham. Mere Green is right on the outskirts. You're surrounded by fields within 4 miles. On the way back, you potter along country lanes right until the last kilometre.

Looks a great route and I'd like to ride but there's also the Corscombe 300 and Tongwynlais 200s this weekend and I'd like to ride those as well. It's a shame such a clash has occured in the AUK calendar. Not an easy choice to make....decisions, decisions.

Oh, I think it's a very easy choice to make. You come to the Midlands and eat home made cookies at scenic controls.  ;D

Well I've downloaded the gpx and perused the 300 route.  Can't resist it so my entry has gone in the post.  The only real riding I've done 'up there' was the Phil and Friends 100 some years back and taking the tandem rather spoiled the fun.

I think the climbing is going to stretch me a bit.  Hope Danial is aware that the free hot meal at the end may be nearer breakfast time for some of us  ;)

Danial, don't let me forget to enter for this (!!), as I am definitely on for it.  I suspect it will be camping at both ends so hope there's somewhere to store my stuff!  It will definitely be a challenge, I'll be glad just to get round within the time.

I got your entry yesterday Nick. I'm still debating what to cook for the masses at the end. It looks like there might be a considerable vegetarian contigent, so it could well be a bean casserole of some description.

Storage won't be a problem. Have you sorted a campsite yet? A cursory search reveals the Kingsbury Water Park, which is about 7.5 miles away.

I live near cambridge so dont do many hills and havent ever done a 300 before.  Would this be a daft idea?
