So this is the thread for your responses to the 'those are great pictures. You must have a really good camera' comments.

At the weekend science exhibition it was "I liked your latest paper. You must have a really good pipette".

Any others?

I once pointed out to someone who had two Nikons with motors and zooms round his neck, that I had had photos published in a national magazine every month for two years, taken with this:

'All the gear no idea" comes to mind.

It's not what you have, but how you use it.

Sometimes you do need the right gear to get the particular shot..

True, but I once had a camera buff flatly deny I could have taken a particular phot of mine, since he knew I only had Russian rangefinders, which he 'knew' were rubbish.  ::-)

'those are great pictures. You must have a really good camera'

I'd agree with everything that's been said.  But the problem is, ever since I've owned a really good camera (in my case, a D7000) I've been taking some really kick-ass shots.

Having good kit doesn't mean you're automatically going to make good pictures.

But it don't half help  :)

On the in focus and reasonably exposed front good kit definitely helps as it can do this stuff reasonably well automatically these days.
As for being able to see a good shot that's more of a knack or artistic bent refined by practice. The kit doesn't help there.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

The kit does help you practice and experiment with a minimal marginal cost.

I never get any better. Don't have the eye. Sometimes get a lucky shot. Mrs Pcolbeck can get a great picture with anything with a lens and a shutter,

True but more thought might go into some shots if the photographer has to invest much money/time/effort in them.
It's often the thought that's missing from mediocre photographs...
