Yet another attempt to commercialize coordinates, and sell virtual space.
Its a proprietary system, so to find a location you have to use their website, or an official app. So you couldn't use it offline for example.

And how practical is it anyway? How easy is it to remember and share 3 random words? If you forget or misspell one part, you get a location on the other side of the world.
Whereas with latitude/longitude, or other coordinate system, you can look at the first part and get some idea of where it is, and how far away it is from another point.

the entire what3words’ system is tiny, and so it can work offline when a user doesn’t have a data connection. The what3words app and our partner apps and services typically launch using the online version of our system, but offline support is now being included in more and more apps that use what3words (including our own).

And to use it in a 'partner app' you have to sign up for their licensing agreement, which has plenty of terms that restrict what you can actually do with the app. They currently have free access to the API, but they could charge in the future.
