I'm doing an event in August with Kat Jungnickel and Emily Chappell that could well be relevant to your interests:
http://linksandshifts.eventbrite.co.uk
Ticketing opens a bit closer to the time, but Midlands-based folks might want to save the date and/or spread the word.
-
That looks brilliant! We'll schedule a weekend at the in-laws :D
-
Thanks, and splendid!
-
Does look rather interesting...will try to make it.
-
Diaried
-
Grand - I'll try and remember to post a heads-up here just before the ticketing goes live.
-
Hmm.... that might be do-able!

Come and stay with us if you like? :)
-
Interesting.... :)
-
Arse biscuits! Just learnt this coincides with Other Peope's holiday plans.
Also, this seems to be a slightly different thing to effortometers?

Booooo!
("The West Midlands conurbation is nice at this time of year"?)

It's part of the same programme of activity. I'll probably be talking about the Orrery in my presentation slot, although Links & Shifts as a whole is more to do with making the ways I (and others) work more visible. The Orrery itself probably won't be there - that gets its official exhibition as part of a group show at Wolverhampton Art Gallery 1st-9th of October (I think those are the dates).
-
Tickets are now available:
http://linksandshifts.eventbrite.co.uk
-
there is now one fewer tickets available ;D
Looking forward!
-
Ah bother got other plans :(
-
Excellent - looks like there'll be some good forumite spotting to be done, judging by the names on tickets so far
But not woollypigs :(
-
Do we need a ticket for the bairn?
-
Do we need a ticket for the bairn?
Nah ...but let me know if he intends to buy a book for Emily to sign ;D
-
Is it terribly bad form if I bring my copy to get it signed?
-
Book sales are being looked after by a happy helper, so Emily can concentrate on the chatting and signing bit. I won't tell if you don't!
-
We've just booked.
-
Good stuff.
For anyone following along or sitting on fences, almost exactly half the tickets have now gone.
-
Off the fence.
-
Excellent - looking forward to catching up with you all again!
-
AIUI, Emilio is currently engaged on the TCR! Hope she's back in time ;)
-
Emilio! There's a 'handle' I haven't heard in years.
-
This is not at all the sort of thing I've been to, so I'm in
Is there a plan for afterwards? A cup of tea or a pint somewhere?
-

Like yer style!

I have things/people to take care of after the event; I'm afraid further cat herding definitely isn't on the list!
Delegating this enquiry for you guys to self-organise at if you want to!
-
In that case... starter for 10: Cherry Reds on John Bright Street[1] http://www.cherryreds.com/ Purveyors of both cups of tea and pints, and a short walk away.
[1] If you find yourself in the King[']s Heath branch you've definitely gone too far.

Seconded!
They have three Fixed Wheel beers: Chain Reaction, Carbon Black and a stout. I don't know them, but they're a deal-clincher.
-
Sorry Nikki. Can't make it. :(
-
Jan and I have booked tickets. I don't know yet if we will be bringing bicycles. If we do, is anyone else interested in creating a small work of cycling-related art on the Monday morning?
I shall have to find some appropriate accommodation. Suggestions would be welcome.
Journey details: arrive Brum at 12.27 Sunday (Chiltern Railways).
Return: 11.50am Monday (Virgin).
We have booked into the Holiday Inn. This will be the first time that my dear wife and I will have spent the night together in Birmingham since our wedding night.
-
And we have orange cardboard. We aren't bringing bikes so there are only 2 bits each.
-
Sorry to hear that Basil, but at least you got the guided tour of the venue in a few weeks ago!
Wowbagger: glad you managed to sort logistics!
I've physio appointments the following day, so I'm afraid I can't join in any doings on the Monday morning.
-
Booked.
-
We decided not to take bikes. We are only staying one night and our train home is at 11.50 the following morning - just time for a leisurely breakfast somewhere and then home. But it should be an excellent main event and evening confab with YACFers!
-
If you are desperate to ride around europe's finest cycling city you could always partake of the brompton dock!

Mmmm, ribena flavoured beer!
I have to admit it was at the Kings Heath branch that I finally fell off the non-meant eating wagon due to their burgers :P
-
BTW, I should probably know...but can't remember...is there bike parking nearby?
-
BTW, I should probably know...but can't remember...is there bike parking nearby?
Mordor Central's delightful bike racks. Now with added bollards.
-
We're still planning to come. Our exact logistical plans are unclear as yet due to the recent suicide of our car, but we will probably be up for a chat to people afterwards.
-

Mordor Central's delightful bike racks. Now with added bollards.
That's what I feared.
-
I suppose 40 bikes on the pavement outside might be considered a little bit of an obstruction...
(I'm planning on cycling, but may end up training to New Street instead.)
-
BTW, I should probably know...but can't remember...is there bike parking nearby?
Yeah, I'm suggesting people use the racks in the drop-off bit of New Street station. There aren't many options on the street near the venue.
There are a few Sheffield stands (https://goo.gl/maps/ZjiWYoNxwqn) close to Cherry Reds if you're going there afterwards.
-
Will there be a Brompton Corner™?
* Other folding cycles are available.
-
I'm not sure: the audience and the cake are going to take up a lot of space...
-
What time is the event likely to end?
-
I'm not sure: the audience and the cake are going to take up a lot of space...
There's an obvious solution to that... ;D
-
What time is the event likely to end?
I reckon the doings will finish by 5:30, aiming to have everyone out (and all the cake eaten) by 6.
-
Thank you!
-
Is there a plan for afterwards? A cup of tea or a pint somewhere?
I've spoken to the Kat and Emily and they're up for sociable drinks and food afterwards, so I've booked a room at Cherry Reds.
Up the stairs and turn left.
Menu here (https://static.secure.website/wscfus/7970326/2886012/cherry-reds-menu-jbs-summer-16.pdf), but it'll be a case of sorting yourself out rather than an organised sit-down.
Will there be a Brompton Corner™?
I think there'll be a corner with garrotting wires across that would be unfit for human occupation, but a few Bromptons could sit there happily.
-

That sounds more like a recumbent corner, but it'll do...
-
I tried to print out the ticket, but my PC was being naughty - will you still let me in?
Please?

Given everything else I imagine you're having to do, this is very thoughtful.
Thank you.

As per the email sent out to everyone this morning: aye.
Please?
I don't know how we're going to deal with this if you're not there:

It kind of simplified things by that stage. Still soooo much still to do, though.
*does stuff*
-
Glad that you are prepared (tea-wise, at least!).
Hope your stuffdoing does all the stuff and renders it done.
-
I have just used Streetview to check the location. Five minutes by foot from Mordor methinks.
We'll be at the venue for about 14:40 on Sunday and up for a pleasant beer afterwards before catching a return train at 18:50. Bit of a pre Wing warm up, eh? :D
-
Hope your stuffdoing does all the stuff and renders it done.
Mountain moved (Kids summer school - don't ask)
Staging moved
PA system cobbled
Chairs unfolded
Cake table awaiting cake
Divots in wall painted
Mostly waiting for you guys now :-)
Oh, and I suppose I'd better write my presentation, too...
Erm, we've got to clear the room after the event before I can leave tomorrow. If anyone fancies lending a hand, it would be much appreciated.
-
Sure, no problem.

Arrgh bloody tapatalk. Knobbled it. Again.
-
I think we might be able to help.
Could someone do me a favour, please? I find myself uncharacteristically low on Salbutamol. :-[
Is there anyone who could bring a spare Ventolin along for me?
I can send you one in return.
Thanks.
-
Seem to have an unused one here. Will stick it in m'bag!

*rummages in drugs drawer*
Yep, can do.
*puts in prominent place to remember tomorrow*
-
Upnabout. Leaving Southend Vic on the 8.19, Marylebone 10.40 Brummagem Moor St. 12.27.
-
Thanks folks! :)
-
I'll be arriving at 11:20 & heading over to the Museum & Art Gallery for a wander before turning up at the venue.
-
Now that is a good idea. I've arranged to do something else this am, but will try to get away early in the hope that I can get a dose of mummies and pre-Raphaelites before the main event.
-
I appear to be onna bus to a station. Have been utterly disorganised about orange cardboard so will do walk up tix, and play it by ear after!
-
Stafford station is full of young people dressed for clubbing but wearing wellies!
Something called the V festival. It's just starting to spot with rain as well...
-
There is a decent open air photo exhibition at Victoria Square. "Britain from the air"
-
We will be on our way shortly
*excited*
-
We are walking around the Bull ring market area at the minute after finding out where the venue is.
-
Drinking tea, in the MAGs Edwardian Tea Rooms.
The waitress is explaining how to use a tea strainer to the chap at the next table ....
-
Packed house. Plenty of YACF'ers and, of course, some cycling royalty.
Excellent lemon drizzle cake.
Nearly start time ...
-
Playing 'spot the YACFer'; given that I've not yet manage to make it to a ride I recognise a fair few...
-
I was probably easiest to spot, given the yacf buff
-
That and Wowbagger's lustrous mane meant early runs on the board, yes ;D
-
Well that was a bit good, wasn't it?
-
T'was indeed.
I'm afraid that I wasn't sporting my most notable identifying feature, namely a Big Bag Of Cake - which would have been a tad "coals to Newcastle" in any case. I was still the short fat ginger bird though :D
-
It was indeed excellent in every way.
A big THANK YOU to Nikki for organising and staging such an awesome event. Great to see a few faces not seen in a while as well as faces new. Wish that I'd had longer to speak to many of you.
Thanks also to Kat, Emily and Nikki for fabulous and interesting talks and to Mike and Anne for wondrous cakes and coffee. It took me a while to recall the identity the Lord and Lady of the Cake but finally I got there. :D
If anybody has any pictures of mllePB in the retro cycling kit please post them. ;D
Apologies for the Long Itch sales pitch but the more the merrier as far as I am concerned.
-
I wonder how the Orrery would interpret and embody a 2 hour wait between DBY and CHD.... Currently anticipating arrival in Leeds with 112 minutes delay, and hoping they'll taxi me from there rather than make me wait for the 2.15 Train-Of-Vomity-Doom connecting service.
Still worth it :D
-
I enjoyed that. Thank you Nikki for all your efforts, and to Kat, Emily (both engaging speakers) and everyone involved (not least the cake-pushers) in making it a success.
I think the last time I saw TEC was in our living room after a chilly E Mids ride very shortly after Louis was born. She's been busy since...
I was sorry (especially since I had suggested it) not to be able to make it for the post chat chat, but the later finish meant I was pushed for time (I like to be home for the boys' bed time).
P.
-
Thanks for organising that Nikki, interesting & enjoyable. Thanks also to Kat & Emily for entertaining & educating me.
Lovely to see friends again & to have a (too) brief chat afterwards.
My trip home was OK, only slightly delayed by the transport police having to evict an unconscious drunk chap at Crewe.
You wanted photos Mike....... ;)

I took a few others walking around & at the museum & gallery. (The first 7 are from the John Moores painting competition at the Walker gallery in Liverpool)

So how did you get home from when you woke? ;)
-

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. :)
Suffice to say, it would accurately convey the excitement of the experience - at least within the limitations inherent from the lack of beer and vomit sensors.
(Hmm, do we need a Network Rail data feeds parser for the database? :D)
-
Apologies to anyone who missed anything because of noise from our row :-[
-
No apologies necessary - as a toddler-wrangler myself I thought he was incredibly well-behaved, and a credit. Get them while they're young!
-
Actually I thought that Butterfly and yourself were a bit disruptive but Nye was doing his best to redress the balance. ;)
It was great to see you there. :D
Great pics Andrewc. Thanks.
-
Thanks all for travel effort and nice words.

Maybe you could let it know that XC, after taxi-ing me home from Leeds on the night, have also agreed to refund in full the cost of the walk-up return fare and as an apology are offering me a freebie return trip on a XC of my choosing at some point in the next 12 months? I imagine it would do happy things, whatever happy things are for an orrery :)
-
Sounds like LEDSunlight.java needs a superEssexDiscoFrenzy() method.

Thanks for Nikki for such a fascinating event. I haven't played at dressing up in a very long time.
After the Victorian cycling garb, I was intrested to see this skirt-friendly Victorian trike
http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/unusual-victorian-tricycle-built-coventry-11837753 (http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/unusual-victorian-tricycle-built-coventry-11837753)
Sadly I wasn't quick enough as the Bonhams website says it went of £15k :o
