Alcoholic drinks and bowel issues...
« on: 14 October, 2011, 09:26:00 pm »
What's going on if beer, say one pint, has started causing, well... gas and diarrhea, whenever one partakes.  Anyone know about this?  Best to cut out alcohol for a month or two..?  In general Loperamide (Immodium) seems to work after a while.

Shepherd Neame used to be known as shit n'scream. Back in them days it was entirely appropriate. These days it's a lot more innocuous. Probably not that though. A friend of mine had a similar problem and has largely given up beer. Dunno really - give up beer? <shudder> Suicide?

Sorry, I've been partaking to much meself ce soir.

No,
Drink much more than you think you should for a week.  Deal with the lavatorial effects.  (C'mon it's only a week)
Cut back to your normal preferred intake.  Your guts will love you.

Yeast? What happens if you eat Marmite or yeasty bread? Also, what happens with non-yeasty alco drinks?
It is simpler than it looks.

Is it just beer?  Just real ale or Lager?  Does it happen with wine?
It could just be a yeasty thing.

Has the bottom fallen out of your world?

Drink Greenall Whitley's and have the world fall out of your bottom!

Yes, could be a yeasty thing - as I think it's just beer.  e.g. pint/bottle of Spitfire the other night. Don't eat enough marmite to know about this.  I've given up trying to diagnose over the web, but it could be some sort of gastritis which is being aggravated by one of constituents in beer?  Looks like a beer free week and trip to GP coming up...

It is worth talking to your GP about this.  It could be a precursor to full blown IBS.

If it's Spitfire, whereas that used to be bottle-conditioned and therefore containing yeast, I'm pretty sure that it's pasteurised now so there's no live yeast in it.

GP - blood test to determine presence/absence of inflammatory markers for starters.  See what happens.

If starchy food also causes bloating, you're losing weight faster than Kerry Katona with a new TV deal and you get explosive yellow poo every morning, suspect giardiasis.  Been anywhere exotic recently?  It's easily cured.

I have found that certain brews are worse than others. Ridley's used to be a real fart-maker when it was still brewed at Hartford End, and about 30 years ago I recall a beer called Webster's, which was brewed in Bradford, I think, which was also a cause of flatulence. Mrs. Wow ad I attended some friends' wedding in the late 1970s and Webster's was on at the reception as the only ale. I kept having to go for a walk to let fly so as not to upset the other wedding guests.
