Busted ipod help
« on: 23 April, 2008, 02:23:00 pm »
I've been given a 40Gb ipod (4th generation click wheel?) with a suspected broken hard drive. The unit is out of warranty. I know nothing of the world that is Apple. What should I do?

These can be very dangerous, send it to me and I'll dispose of it safely :D

Seriously, why do you think that it has a broken hard drive?

Was it originally formatted for Mac or PC?

Do you have a cable for it?

If so what happens if you plug it into a computer? Does it get recognised as a USB drive?

Better get hold of a copy of iTunes - which is a free download from Apple, and see if it get recognised as step 1 may fail if it's not been set for 'disc use'.

I thought they were flash memory - not a hard drive

Presume you've tried connecting to I tunes and running restore factory settings?

No, the 40GB is a hard drive, but connecting to iTunes is a good idea.

If the hard drive really is borked you can put a new one in (a bigger capacity one if you want). You need a 2 inch hard drive and the hardest part is getting the case open. Do a google search on replacing teh drive for that  model and you will find details.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I'm not recommending this method but........
A friend had a similar ipod with a clicking hard drive, not showing any ting on screen or playing.
A short tap on the desk has resolved it for the moment but I expect it to go again.
