Here's today's sequence of broadband speed tests, I've used thinkbroadband.com's speed tester because it is the only one I can get to work reliably after 18:00. Click on the times for the full results of each test. I could have hot-linked to the result image files, but they only register to the nearest 0.1Mbps.  ::-)

11:06 BST - 207.38kbps
19:09 BST - 84.25kbps
19:27 BST - 33.26kbps
19:38 BST - 124.45kbps
22:40 BST - 59.5kbps
23:52 BST - 39.93kbps

Just over a week ago, downloading a 8MB zip folder of drivers for the modem took around two minutes (~0.53Mbs). Today, I tried updating Spybot, and gave up after ten minutes with only 800kB out of 4.7MB downloaded.

I feel some major grinkage coming on...  >:(

Before grinking, I'd suggest going through the normal diagnosis process with your ISP.

The problem with BB is that is is complex with the potential for problems at all stages (including in  your own home wiring). As a starting point:

Check what speed your router is connecting at (can be significanlty different from a speed test result
Run the BT Speedteseter (if you are on a BT line)

Well, that's interesting...

Intertube performance was pretty crummy this afternoon, but since I reconnected at 17:25, I've noticed that it's been running quicker - to the point that I can actually get the speedtest.net tester to load up and run.

17/04/11 late evening:
average speed = ~150 kbps (average of 3 tests on thinkbroadband.com)
peak speeds = ~ 540 kbps (average of 3 tests on broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk)
QOS = 3%, max TCP delay = >800 ms (Myspeed VOIP quality test)

19/04/ early evening
average speed = ~1090 kbps (average of 3 tests on thinkbroadband.com)
peak speeds = 1624 kbps (average of 3 tests on broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk)
peak speeds = 1357 kbps (average of 3 tests on speedtest.net)
QOS = 57%, max TCP delay = 680ms (Myspeed VOIP quality test)

I haven't even grinked my ISP yet - all I've done today is reinstall the modem - twice, because the installation of the more recent drivers* meant I couldn't connect, so I rolled back to the original drivers as installed off my Tiscali CD.

Given speeds are meant to drop during peak time, if this is a genuine partial restoration of performance, I should be looking at a much better set of results tomorrow morning. Now, if the speed consistency and transit pauses can sort themselves out, I'd be a very happy surfer.

* The installation process offers a big list of different combinations of encapsulation modes and protocols to choose from. Guess I picked the wrong one!

Crawwwl! Still, the phone line only got unborked yesterday, so I suppose I have another few days of that to look forward to until they crack the pipe open a bit wider, or whatever it is they do.

Yeah, the BRAS rate limiting takes at least 24 hours to catch up with increases in line sync.  Sometimes longer.  The important thing is to leave your router on and connected; it won't increase the BRAS rate unless it thinks the line is stable.

Virgin (cheapest one)

Amazingly, download speed is getting better and ping time longer:

Hmm...

BRAS rate is currently 13Mbps (throttled to 95% at the LNS to prioritise small packets), so that's a pretty good result.

Why BT feel the need to rate limit a connection that's synced at 15.3Mbps to 13Mbps I don't know...  However the annual student exodus was this weekend, so with any luck it'll soon catch up with the lack of interference and we'll be syncing at >17Mbps for the rest of the summer.

Just did the test, the piccy doesn't seem to work for me but I'm getting

8.25mbps download,
0.65mbps upload,
46ms ping,

with Talk Talk.

I've done the test at various times, 8mbps seems to be the usual download, upload has been up to 0.8mbps.

How can that be A+ better than 99% of UK? I are hard of understanding...

I assume it bases it on all the tests you've done. I can click on view results and it will give me a graph of all my tests.

i let it choose it's preferred server for the test which ended up in Dublin(!) though.  I suspect that has most effect on the ping time and fine-tuning the server used woudln't improve my other scores much...

Yup...

With a bit of luck the wire direct from google HQ to google London passes underneath my house in Bristol. Will they notice if I tap into it with a T socket?  ;)

Interesting that its asymmetry thing1. Perhaps some traffic shaping on the switch access ports.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.
