Recommend a non-ugly windproof/waterproof jacket
« on: 28 November, 2016, 01:31:36 pm »
I'm after something that looks like the Greenspot jacket:

The features I'm looking for are:
One muted dark colour, dull green or blue or black.
Non-shiny.
Not ultra thin.
No logos or writing on the outside.
No random patterns, stripes, different colours.
Windproof.
Shower resistant, or "waterproof".
Don't need reflectives.
Don't need pockets.
Fairly cheap, up to about £50.

There must be a lot of people who would buy such a jacket instead of the typical ugly cycling jacket?

One muted dark colour, dull green or blue or black.

until Team $ky made black fashionable, it was near impossible to sell dark jackets to cyclists. So they do exist, but very rare (especially with NO reflecs or highlights).

try a fishing or horsey manufacturer - they all love camo colours!

Or something aimed at hikers? TK Maxx, of all places, sometimes turns up things like that at prices like that, but it's down to pure chance what you find there.

Alpkit Arro, £32. Available in black, does have some small logos. Maybe a bit too thin? https://www.alpkit.com/products/arro-mens

Or Keela Neutronic Smock, in green or black, pretty subtle logo. http://www.keela.co.uk/neutronic-smock-jacket.html

Snugpak Vapour Active, green or black or camo. Probably a bit heavier weight than the above. http://www.snugpak.com/outdoor/vapour-active-windtop

Vulpine Harrington? Fails on price (though 'only'  by about 2x if you find it in a sale), and has pockets, but it strikes me as very nice indeed.

Almost anything intended as a cycling jacket will have reflective bits on it.
This seems to fit the bill otherwise: http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Pearl-Izumi-Elite-Barrier-Windproof-Cycling-Jacket_77429.htm

Most things sold as windshells will use a very thin material.

You could try looking at general outdoor softshell jackets, for example

Watch out for hoods and over-thick fleecy linings (though the Greenspot, being double ventile, gives a fair amount of added warmth)

I've got an new (old stock) original Bertram Dudley Greenspot Nomad jacket - 40" chest in an unusual dark chocolate brown. Sadly I'm not intending to grow into it anymore. But you'd have to give me £150 for it :o

One assumes from the photo posted, the OP has visited the Hilltrek modern version.

In the end I got a walking jacket, a "Quechua Men's Waterproof Mountain Walking Jacket - MH100" in all black from Decathlon, £30.

Also available in dark blue but a small breast logo in white.

I'm absolutely happy with it, and a bargain price. I got the smallest size (small) out of 6 sizes and I'm not a midget, it's not baggy but I would prefer a slightly closer fitting cut, but then I do have skinny arms and torso. The sleeves are long enough for the riding position but not too long off the bike, but that's just lucky for me.

I wear it more off the bike in fact as a general rain/cold weather jacket. On the bike more as a windproof as I avoid riding when it's raining.
