Etrex Legend HCx stopped talking to computer.
« on: 13 April, 2012, 03:02:25 pm »
My much used Legend has lost the ability to connect with a computer.

Mapsource can't "find" it - for transferring files.
Windows can't see it in USB mass storage mode.

Tried rebooting both unit and 'puter.
Tried different USB cable
even tried different computer.

The Legend flags up that it is on external power... but whatever I try there is no sign of communication from within Windoze.... not even the "bong" tone I susually get when connecting/disconnecting.

Is there a hard reset/return to factory settings that I can't find and might try as a last resort before sending it back to Garmin?

There is a hard reset but it'll wipe all your data:

With the unit off hold down the Page (top right) and joystick simultaneously. Press and release the power button whilst still holding down the other two keys. It will then ask if you wish to remove all data, answer yes and it will do a full reset to factory settings.

The first time you use the unit afterwards it might take up to 20 minutes to get satellite lock on.
It didn't look at all like that in the photographs

Re-install the Garmin USB driver on your computer?
when you're dead you're done, so let the good times roll
