I refer the Hon Mem to this thread's original post, which was about...

John Terry.

Since it's no longer topical I ought to add that I started the thread the same day that Mr. Murray won the New York Open.

If I go back 8 months or so, I think that there were only 5 names on that list of 12 with which I was familiar: Wiggins, Ennis, Murray, Hoy and McIroy. I hadn't heard of Farah until the Olympics started. OK, I'm a sample of 1, but I'd conclude that he hadn't had nearly so much media exposure as the others - Golf and Tennis invariably feature on radio news bulletins, and I'm interested in cycling.

Having said that, if, this time last year, someone had shown me a photo of Wiggo, I doubt that I would have been able to name him.

I had only heard of Hoy, Murray and Wiggins before this summer. Now I've heard of Mo Farah, (Jessica?) Ennis and David Weir (he comes from somewhere in the borough so they keep going on about him) too, so I feel that I have properly participated in the Olympics, even though I pretty much avoided them.

It is. The British are quite unusual in not recognising chess as a sport.

That is because chess is a game, just like checkers or Monopoly. Calling it a sport doesn't make it so.

I would imagine there are (multiple) threads on non-British based forums entitled "Is chess a sport?" where everybody agrees that it's ridiculous that it is considered as such. Much like British based ones where everyone thinks games like darts and snooker aren't sports....

I used to play a board/wargame with friends called Third Reich.  Games could sometimes last for days (we often played through overnight and were  physcially exhausting and mentally draining).  I appreciate that probably sounds incredibly pompous but while I wouldn't have classed playing that involved a game as a sport I wouldn't have called it liesure either.

I've worked all day and all night (as I'm sure many others have) and been left physically exhausted and mentally drained, but I wouldn't call "Going to work" a sport...

Tell me, what is this "chess" that you speak of? I'm proud to say I've never heard of them.

Well yes.  I'm currently back on shiftwork for a while and it makes me want to punch people who bang on about jetlag.

Ah yes! Based on that, I am happy to recognise Chess as good sports.
