I saw that on Farcebark earlier. Very most sad

Fortunately I had not got round to booking flights, cars, hotels usw so will not have to wrestle with the daunting prospect of Trying To Get My Money Back.  My grate frends Arnold and Marieke were terrifically organised and booked stuff in mid-February.

It's a bugger for some of the student teams — notably Delft/Amsterdam as their course requires they build a brand-new machine every year.  Construction of VeloX TX was well underway but it's not the sort of thing you can build while being socially distant.

No easy way to put it, we are cancelling the WHPSC for 2021.
The decision was a difficult one to make, but all things considered, we felt is was the right thing to do. We always try to reduce risks in the event but this just wasn't one we could solve with hay bales.
We will be back again next year,
WHPSC 2022 September 11th-17th, Battle Mountain Nevada.
We will sincerely miss being with our Human Power family as well as our Battle Mountain family.
Stay safe everybody.
Sorry and Thank you.

It gets worse.  My Sinister Agents tell me that The Man has pulled the plug on HPT Delft/Amsterdam too, probably because Money.  This is a Bad Thing, not just for the future of the event* but because they always bring a small army of Penniless Student Oaves who can be co-opted into doing the heavy lifting required to set the course up and take it down again.  An Oaf shortage means us increasingly elderly and decrepit volunteers will have to do it ourselves.

Bah!

* They have in the past held both the Outright and Women’s records and were tilting for the multi-rider one before 2020 got scrubbed.

As a sort-of substitute our Italian pals are looking to put on an event in October at Balocco, wot is the (former?) Alfa Romeo test track about halfway between Turin and Milan.  Not sure I can be tempted to flog all the way down there for a weekend that then gets rained off even if it's cool and stylish Italian rain rather than the brash in-your-face USAnian variety that sometimes afflicts Battle Mountain.

Sinister Agent J informs me that GCN have borged the Soup Dragon/AIM93 streamliner project from London South Bank University and have lined up one Jonathan Shubert as rider.  His main claim to fame is doing a sub 3 hour one-way 100 miler last year, which is going a bit even if you have a Mighty Rushing Wind behind you.  They are planning to have a crack at the Hour record at Millbrook first, which might yet allow me to be a shameless #MediaTart as an Official Observer.

Former Soup Dragon pilot Russell Bridge is building his own 'liner, but it’s all on Instagram which in my case I have not got.

Edit: apparently my grate frend Larry Lem has offered GCN's Hank and “his pro cyclist legs” a ride in the Wahoo at Battle Mountain 2022 but has not yet been heard anything back.  In spite of being cooked up in the Los Angeles equivalent of a Sheds the Wahoo did 70+ last time out with Denise Muller-Koronek at the helm.

GCN do love a record attempt.

And I've love to see Soup Dragon with the hammer down but not approaching death-wobble.

I'm pretty sure they’ll not be persevering with the Burrows bits, if only because most of them either got cut up and recycled and/or are now buried several fathoms down in a Nevada landfill.

Perhaps we shall have to Private Detective Mr Schubert to find out if he's still expecting the gig. Sadly though it feels like this is falling through the cracks.

Do we have confidence in BM '22?

Last time I looked at the Farcebok group it was still on, but while I'll phone the motel in BM next week to let 'em know I'm planning to go I'm not going to book flights and cars for a while yet.

My Sinister Agents tell me that Mr Shubert is planning on doing RAAM this year, which would seem to mitigate against any participation in going-fast-inna-lying-down-stylee for quite a while :-\

Just had a shufti at the event’s Farcebok group, mostly to check that it hadn’t been cancelled since Saturday, and apparently notably rapid trackie François Pervis is promising to appear.  What he'll be riding is not known to this Unit as I still ent got round to bamboozling the Zuckerbots into letting me back in, but there’s a sort-of-artist's-rendering of something that looks almost, but not quite, entirely unlike Altaïr 6.  Which was the star turn in 2019.  Those with very long memories may, however, recall the last time a notably rapid trackie showed up, viz. a Mr J Queally in 2001.  It did not go well…

I guess it's about the period of adaptation.  Trackies do a large fixed gear, which IIUC is not what they do at Battle Mountain.

In the case of Queally it was also because the bike was shit twice the size of a Varna.

Here you go Mr L

⚠️🚨New challenge🚨⚠️
It's time to announce my new challenge!
🏁World record attempt at a carnage speed bike🏁
It's been almost 3 years now that I've been preparing this challenge in collaboration with the future engineers of South Annecy and the support of Mavic , Michelin and CIXI .
The world record to beat is 144km/h! 🌎☄️
Happening in September in the desert of Nevada 🇺🇸
8km straight line to start and only the last 200 meters are timed.
The average speed of the last 200 metres sets the record ⏱.
An effort similar to that of a track chase: 4 minutes maximum intensity with lots of constraints such as camera vision, lack of oxygen and space in the fairing and high temperatures to withstand 🔥
I'll tell you in detail about all this and the fair bike in future posts 🛸🚀
Waiting for the big sprinter I am, must turn into @gannafilippo and I have work to do! 😅

Ta!  So Annecy are involved   Wonder whether Ilona is coming back too, to tilt for the 80 mph hat…

Edit: Just been clued in to the news that M. Pervis will be riding Altaïr 6, albeit an Altaïr 6 somewhat modified to accommodate his extra length – at 1.81 m big there’s rather more of him than Fabien (1.69) or Ilona (1.72).  So it doesn’t seem likely that she’ll be returning chiz, unless they've got some kind of adjustment wossname in the bike.

Chef d'Equipe Guillaume de France, who is in communication with BRITAIN'S Russell Bridge*, makes no mention of a second Altaïr 6, or even an Altaïr 7, but there is a nice picture of François standing next to:
  • the bike, and
  • a red Toyota pickup truck belonging to Mont Blanc airport, and
  • an executive jet
