Talk me out of it - backyard or camping woodstove
« on: 11 April, 2011, 01:49:24 pm »
This isn't bike camping stuff. Oh, no.

This is car or backyard stuff.

I have some birdy money left. Fingers are itching over one of these:

Depends on the bike?  Sounds like an excuse for n+1 to me.

Looks really nice though.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

<sigh> you are all hopeless, absolutely hopeless. I ask you to talk me out of something, and you drool over it instead!

If I do buy one, I could carry it down to the knavesmire for the cycle rally . . .

It would need a spark arrester mod - wood embers flying over a field of nylon would not be good.

I'm going to have to talk to MrsCharly tonight, I can see.

No, mrcharly, you should not buy that thing.

Did that help?  Was I convincing?

Cute!

No, I mean, what a dreadful thing.

If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car.

mrcharly, you could be on the verge of a terrible mistake.

Tho I'm not saying which way the mistake lies ;)

hmm - lukewarm reception at home. Mostly because she prefers an open fire and has no desire to start cooking outdoors. She pointed out that a chimenea might be better.

Which got me thinking. I have something like 4 empty gas cylinders at the mooring. I have angle grinders, jigsaws, welder.  Sounds like a recipe for a home-made stove.

Apologies if this is teaching grandma to suck eggs...

I remember a mate talking about making stoves out of old gas cylinders and saying that you have to be very careful about residual gas - not just in the cyclinder, but kind of absorbed into the metal?  So if you haven't cut a gas cylinder up before, it's worth looking up some advice from those in the know.

Absorbed into the metal?

That is about as likely as water having memory.

Emptying the cylinders is actually really easy. Open valve. Unscrew valve. Fill cylinder with water. Empty. Fill and empty once more.

Oh ok. I didn't have a clue myself, I just remember this guy talking about it. Maybe he meant being careful to flush it out properly.

A friend of mine turned a gas cylinder into a chimenea with the help of an angle grinder and welder, and a length of steel pipe.  One he got the chimenea in full flow you could see the pipe at the top slowly turn red with the heat!   :o
