The Venerable Mother (who knows everything) and has stayed there with The Old Man confirmed your info.  One is pleasantly surprised!

How far into London do you need? There's one in Debden only a couple of miles' walk from the tube station, or one just inside the M25 (you can hear it in the distance) near Enfield.  I've stayed at both; I wouldn't recommend Debden at the weekend because it's more like being at a music festival than camping.

Debden House is probably the most central campsite to London.

It can be fairly lively for sure.

Does have the plus point of allowing campfires in certain fields.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

There seems to be one in Parliament Square :demon:
I've stayed at the one in Lee Valley, which is OK in a corporate sort of way, at least it has decent facilities, is reasonably quiet (When I was there June last year) and felt secure enough to go out all day and leave the tent.

There are two C&CC sites in London - Chertsey & Walton - but they're just for members, as is the Certificated site at Hersham, which I think is the only one I'd say was in London of those on OS maps 176&177.  There are other sites at Chingford and Edmonton, which seem to be available for non-members, both take tents, and have toilet facilities.

I can fully confirm that the campsite at Crystal Palace does take tents, We were there less than 2 weeks ago and there were a couple of backpacking campers on the site.
Most people tip-toe through life hoping the make it safely to death.

There's a campsite on the river between Windsor and Richmond, can't remember the exact spot, but it looked very pretty.

Or you could try Parliament Square?  I understand that's very popular with long term campers. :)
