Croaked.  "Passed" applies to a lot of things, some of which we have all passed at some time or other.

As for Berlu, can't say it affects me one way or another.  He lived a full life and had lots of fun, which is the most anyone can wish for.

My favourite bit in the entire film and I have been known to shout that line at the TV, or the wireless, when some sanctimonious pillock mews about someone "passing".  Yes, yes I know, MrsL thinks I'm bats as well.

I'm not a fan of euphemisms, but I find if I use "X died" people get really upset/distressed and that includes people I like and respect. Really hard to find a balance given the inherently upsetting nature of the topic.
