Attention National Trust members.
« on: 02 September, 2023, 10:52:54 am »
It's AGM time again and the Tufton Street backed Reform Trust lot are trying to get elected to the council in order to fight against the "woke" agenda, endorsed by Farage & the usual suspects in the Torygraph.

There should be a letter or email being sent out to members,  if you've not yet got it there is a link to the voting form here. https://t.co/Xdkr2Py3SW

You can read the candidates profiles & make your own mind up, or select the councils recommendations with 1 tick.  You'll need your membership number.

I haven't had an email yet but will be voting.

Edit: I've skimmed through the candidates' blurb and I've spotted 2 people who seem to be Faragistas: Andrew Gimson and Stephen Green, who seems like a nice man https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Voice_(UK) refers.

Oh, and another: Violet Manners.

I think the Telegraph article had a list of the offensive candidates.

Also listed in this tweet. https://x.com/otto_english/status/1697664782248132617

It starts to feel like a war.  Still, they were trounced last time (was it really a year ago?).

Rees-Mogg is also backing the Reform Trust lot. https://x.com/sundersays/status/1701870667627430214

"Its a much better organised, professional campaign

Beyond columns in eg Spectator and Telegraph, Rees-Mogg and Farage have well designed posters & are *directly circulating the voting link*

If this could bring in net +50k voters, could get the Restore Trust candidates elected"

They're not going to give up, are they? The NT is going to end up putting all its time and energy into fighting these bastards.

There is nothing in the world that people like restore trust haven't spoiled and made worse.

They are wreckers, bespoilers, and scoundrels who think they are the only right thinking people.

Which are the ones to avoid?  Gimson, Gibbs and Green (all blokes, quelle surprise) look like the worst gammons, but Manners also makes my fash detector bleep.

Five candidates: Gibbs, Gimpson, Manners, Sumption, Merricks.

Curiously, Stephen Green is not on the Rees-Mogg approved list, but he seems to be as bad.

Sumption was a Supreme Court judge -- always an eccentric choice, as he came straight from barristering and historianing rather than through the rigorous judging exams -- but in retirement he seems to have gone right off the deep end.

I’ve never voted in the NT AGM before in spite of being a member sins 1984. I felt I should this year, and thank Andrew et al for promoting me to,do so.

Retiring allowed him to vent his right wing views without the possibility of losing his cushy job.

" The board's recommended candidates were elected over the Reform Trust  challenger slate by a 2:1 margin, getting two-thirds (81-88k) with Sumption and colleagues (46-48k) winning 35% of the 130k votes cast."

35% is too many though.

That is a frighteningly high number of gammon, but I suspect (hope) that the figures are skewed becuase the right wing were mobilised and motivated to vote becuase they wanted to squash the woke, whereas the majority of members were t in the least interested or motivated to vote.

Interestingly, I never received any notice of, or voting papers for, the AGM despite being a member for 20 odd years and always receiving them in previous years.  I need to look into why, although thankfully the right people won without my vote.
