I change my mind every time I think about this question but "You're A Big Girl Now" by Bob Dylan and both "Lover's Prayer" and "These Arms Of Mine" by Otis Redding are never far from the top. Clarion, have you heard "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Gordon Lightfoot from the late 60s.?

Me, I will offer you
pearls of rain
from lands
where it doesn't rain.
I'll dig (into) the ground
till my death
to cover your body
with gold and light.
I will make a world
where love will be king
where love will be law
and you shall be queen
don't leave me

and people say Dylan is a poet.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Ne Me Quitte Pas is wonderful, as is all of Brel's work that I have heard. But those who say Dylan is a poet are right. Everything he does ain't poetry but plenty of it is! Love them both.

There's something about I Won't Send Roses from Mack & Mabel that appeals to me:

I won't send roses
Or hold the door
I won't remember
Which dress you wore
My heart is too much in control
The lack of romance in my soul
Will turn you gray kid
So stay away kid
Forget my shoulder
When you're in need
Forgetting birthdays is guaranteed
And should I love you, you would be the last to know
I won't send roses
And roses suit you so

My pace Is frantic
My temper's cross
With words romantic
I'm at a loss
I'd be the first one to agree
That I'm preoccupied with me
And it's inbred kid
So keep your head kid
In me you'll find things
Likes guts and nerve
But not the kind things
That you deserve
And so while there's a fighting chance
Just turn and go
I won't send roses
And roses suit you so
Have you seen my blog? It has words. And pictures! http://ablogofallthingskathy.blogspot.com/

I've changed my mind.

O my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

There's a few . . .

Freddie singing 'Love of My Life' and 'You Take My Breath Away', along with 'Who Wants To Live Forever?' from Highlander

'Save Me' is heart rending, as is 'The Days of Our Lives'

Some good ones I might have chosen myself here: The Beach Boys 'God Only Knows', Neil Young 'Harvest Moon'...

I would like to go over the top and go for Glenn Campbell's 'Wichita Lineman'.

Or perhaps Nina Simone singing 'My Baby Just Cares For Me'.

So many songs concentrate on the love of one person for another, and so many emphasise the insecurity of that sort of one-sided love, I suppose Crazy is a fine example of that.

Songs which celebrate shared love as the foundation of a life together are rarer, my favourite is 'The Folks who live on the Hill.

Blur's Tender is probably the closest I come to a soppy love song. (We got the album on our honeymoon.)
Otherwise, I'd probably choose There's A Ghost In My House by the Fall or something by Nick Cave.

Without hesitation:

Silence is the question - The Bad Plus - http://www.youtube.com/v/gy5HbiDTaKw&rel=1

Stay With Me Till Dawn by Judie Tzuke

Probably the first gig I went to with Mrs n was JT in an Oxford quad on a summer's evening in 1981. Not usually my sort of thing but it was wonderful.
There's no vibrations, but wait.

Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Ooh that too. I was of an impressionable age when Judy was making it big, and she definitely was my sort of thing. The song lyrics are good, but the texture of the sound in the production was magnificent. I got to see her in 1984.

Fab, though how you knew that that exists is beyond me!
Nice though it is, it doesn't quite grab me in the same way as the original.
