What was the first film you watched?
« on: 04 May, 2015, 01:32:29 pm »
Seeing the thread entitled "What was the last film you watched?",  got me thinking if I could remember the first film I watched (at a cinema).

I think it must have been the Aristocats for me.

An appropriate on for today: Star Wars, A New Hope. Apparently I sat there for about ten minutes then turned to my dad and said "What do we do now?"

If ones watched at skool (with a projector and screen and so forth) count then the earliest I can remember was either "Kes" or "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly".  I'm sure there must have been visits to the cinema before then though.

I think Bambi was the first one I saw too. No idea what age I was - 3 or 4 - or where it was.  First one I followed was "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". The magic mirror on the wall scared the shit out of me.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Snow White & the Seven Dwarves.
Can't remember which cinema - prolly Odeon Streatham.
Can't remember too much about the film as it happens....

What I do remember, however, is going with my Nan to the ABC Streatham (now an apartment block) to see Where Eagles Dare when it first came out.
Now there's a film.
"Broadsword calling Danny Boy, Broadsword calling Danny Boy, do you read me? Over!"
And Clint Eastwood wiping out the entire Wermacht, single handedly. Or something.

ETA - Oh! and I remember as an 8 or 9 YO being taken to watch Colonel Wolodyjowski, a Polski film based on a classic book by Henryk Sienkiewicz.
I don't think they had censorship in the Polish film industry in those days. In fact, I don't think I've ever see anything quite so dark or barbaric.
Eyeballs being boiled/seared out by red-hot irons, quite realistically and graphically filmed. Widespread and random torture.
I didn't sleep for months. Never mind turn off the light!
WTF were my parents thinking? It's Polish - it's literature -  so it must be ok?

First film I remembered enjoying was 'Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines', but mainly for the aeroplanes.
Getting there...

The day the earth stood still - the 1951 version, not 2008  ;D

Probably at the Gaumont, Highbury Corner - with my Dad.

Dumbo for me too

At least that's the first I remember anyway - apparently we saw Fantasia before that but that's my Mum's memory not mine.

As this is almost certainly going to devolve into Disney films seeing as everyone would be very small at the time I'd say, what about the first one you paid to see yourself?

For me probably a failed attempt to see Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind that turned into a double bill of Spiderman Strikes Back (I think, summit like that) and Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty.

First film I paid to see and enjoyed properly was Pale Rider.  Still one of my favourite cinema experiences to this day.  My old home town of Bedford had an unfeasibly large cinema before the Milton Keynes multiplex killed it - 1500 seats and the largest screen in England (maybe second tbf).  We (my brother and I) saw it in an afternoon Matinee and were in there virtually alone.  Awesome personal experience  ;D

Snow White & the Seven Dwarves.

My dad says he remembers my gran taking him to see that when he was very little and he was so scared by the scary trees in the forest that he cried and she had to take him home.

My first at the pictures was either The Aristocats or Lady and the Tramp.

No! It was real  :P

Google tells me it was The Cat From Outer Space!

Quote
A UFO is stranded on earth and impounded by the US government. Its pilot, a cat with a collar that has special powers, including the ability to allow the cat to communicate with humans, has eluded the authorities and needs the help of a man named Frank in order to reclaim and repair his ship to get back home

IMDB

Only 5.9/10  ::-)
