I did put the heating on before going out for a bike ride. It's good to go out with warm feet, much easier to stay warm than get warm.

I like wood burning stoves/open fires. One really warm spot, and you can heat one room to a good fug without making the whole house stuffy.

Seconded.  I also find that not being cold improves the mojo factor.

Veering towards casual sexism alert!

Here is a counter-example:
the very-ex was exceedingly clueless in this respect, unlike my excellent self.

This house contains males and a female at ratio of 3:1
No casual sexism here...

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

The Jeermans at npower have told me my direct debit is going up from £41 a month to £88 a month.  They can FRO.  It's the right amount based on four years' usage and their tabulating engine doesn't know I have 3/4 tonne of wood to burn.  This is a major disincentive to change supplier - every new supplier cranks up the monthly payments until you're vastly in credit.

The solution is PAYG surely? But lots of folk like to use DD for convenience and cost spreading purposes.

Monthly DD of actual usage (from the smart meters) here.  I can budget better than some naive algorithm can.

Providers often offer a discount for DD payments, so paying for monthly usage (by something other than DD) will cost more over a year.

Money Saving Expert has a whole page on this, including the rules they should play by if you start quoting certain sections of the regulations:-

Quarterly PAYG. I'd rather trust a squirrel to manage DD payments than the average utility company. Ain't no way they're getting access to my bank account.

A lot of suppliers use customer balances to fund their, often loss-making, businesses.   There have been several supplier exits this year and I expect a few more over this Winter.

The suppliers have been told not to overcharge on budget payment plans but they still do.   Ovo offered to pay interest on credit balances but this was found to be anti-competitive.

I just left npower and was owed £120.   After 2 weeks they sent me a cheque despite having my bank details.   We all know damn well that this is because they assume that at least a percentage of their leaving customers will forget to bank a cheque or lose it.

Heating:  Add one to the region of the venn diagram marked 'that's what the thermostat is for'
Stove: Lit for the first time this season on Friday.  As noted by Mr L elsewhere - stinky.
2023 targets: Survive. Maybe.
