I have my my Spire Pride badge...

I've also asked the marketing team if they'll do a Spire Pride month background for Zoom.

Happy Pride Month.

I'm thinking hard on this one with my few available brain cycles about Pride, what it means, who it includes, who it excludes and indeed how commercialised it can be (thus removing attention from the many intersectional issues that shiny happy pretty queers can cover up).

I wanted to reply joyfully to this, but also mindfully of the people I know who aren't supported/represented by this month and call myself if no one else to think, say, do more for those still marginalised because of queerness.

Homelessness - high in LGBTQIA populations.
Mental health issues - discrim and marginalisation fucks people up.
Conversion therapy - just ban it already and no fucking religious/therapeutic exemptions.
Transphobia - being used to split LGBTQIA from one another, don't fall for it, don't amplify the fuckers, but do visibly support trans people.
Global issues - many countries being LGBTQ is very unsafe ranging from social badness through to state sponsored violence and death penalty (which is what Pride was protesting in the first place!).

I've missed some stuff I know. Screwit, posting this anyway.

Oh, and the first Pride March, was organised by a bisexual woman, so people who claim bisexuals are latecomers can fuck the fuck off.

Happy Pride Month everyone!

Ooh - it also looks as though we may have a corporate presence at both London and Manchester Prides this year...

I always associate Pride with Mother's Pride.  Is that still a thing?

It is at once a collective and an abstract noun, as well as a celebration and a demonstration.

I googled it and it's still sold in Scotland.  I don't think wholemeal bread is a thing there.

Back on topic, we do Pride and LGBT History months at work, which means we have a rainbow flag outside for 1/6 of the year.

Happy* pride to you all too.

I’m pleased to say we do pride at work. For instance, pronouns on slack, and not just for the month.

* I’ve been on pride marches that had a significant element of protest with the party. So “happy” never feels like quite the right word. Successful maybe?

It'd be gay bread. Absolutely no use for ham sandwiches.

We're so diversity positive aboard our corporate mothership that we do Be Gay Tuesday every week. It's a chance for straight people to try out for the other team.

We'd mostly got bored of black lives mattering, so it's good news we can now hug Asian people to let them know how important they are to us. And who doesn't like Chinese food and kung-fu?

I struggle with (as we are encouraged to do) add "Preferred pronouns: he/him" to e-mails, since I am unaware of any people of the other gender ever being named Roger.    Or any men, post-1970, whence it became a verb and a bit fnarr, fnarr.  If my name was Chris, Sam, or Fran, I'd be more on board.  I understand it looks better if everyone does it, but I have the usual cyclist's abhorrence of redundant luggage.

On a profile makes it handy for getting introductions right, eg in a zoom call “this is Dan, they’ve been here for aeons doing I don’t know what”.

Point of order: There's more than one other gender, and it's entirely reasonable for non-binary people to be called Roger.

Also, we shouldn't be calling them 'preferred' pronouns, they're just the correct pronouns.

Anyway, in the interests of general geekiness and reducing signature bloat I've unilaterally decided that there should be an X-Pronouns: header in email.  If anyone wants to join me, the Pratchett fans have helpfully documented how to add arbitrary headers in various popular mail clients.

I admit it. I find it slightly odd, but for another reason. Pronouns are for speaking about people in the third person, which is rarely polite in the presence of the subject; I'm pretty sure I was brought up not to do it. Now that doesn't mean that I want to be rude as soon as someone's back is turned but, when I'm interacting with people, thinking about how to speak about them in their absence is not at the front of my mind.

On a profile makes it handy for getting introductions right, eg in a zoom call “this is Dan, they’ve been here for aeons doing I don’t know what”.
Case in point. Natural (and I think slightly more polite) English, with the free bonus of gender neutrality as well, would be, “This is Dan, who has been here for aeons doing I don’t know what”.

I saw the point (not an expert) as being that whoever is doing the introducing can easily know whether to use he, she or something neutral for the particular case. If they're introducing me as a colleague avoiding particular pronouns, or getting it wrong, on account of not knowing might come over as awkward as not knowing what it is I do there :)

Or get people to introduce themselves. "I'm Dan. I've been here for aeons and don't yet know what I do."
