Title: How many bikes are there in your shed/garage/house?
Post by: Charlotte on 09 July, 2008, 04:18:43 pm
I've just sorted out in-sewer-ants for the new garage and I had to add up how many bikes Liz and I have between us.

I'm shocked and a little bit embarrassed.  Those coming to the garage-warming party next Wednesday will see why.  I have eleven, she has four and we share the new tandem.  That's sixteen bikes between us.  All of mine are ridable and I've also got parts to put together at least one more.

Fair enough - if we were both really into tennis, we might both own 16 tennis racquets between us.  Serious anglers might have sixteen rods.  But sixteen bicycles?

Make me feel better - tell me how many you have in your garage.  Are they just yours or are they a collection of you and your partner's or the whole family?

Hacktcherly.

I have five.

Rosie, Ollie the Fixie, the Trek, the Shiny New Beautiful Piece of Loveliness, and the rustbucket.

And half shares in the tandem.

Do tandems count as one, and does a frame count as half?

Four at the moment, but if I ever win the Lottery, thae number is likely to increase dramatically.

We have eleven 12 here (I forgot the one in the hall :-[). I haven't included the 2 tandems in Yorkshire, the one in my friend's garage or the mountain bike that my dad's riding. So that's really 16. Plus a frame and a frame plus in Yorkshire. 18. Plus the one I left where I used to live, so that I can ride it if I'm down there. 19. But eleven 12 really. :D

Actually, sitting here with my website, memories, and a pen and paper I don't think it's as bad as I initially feared.  About 14 saddles I think?

8 bikes, 4 decent ones, 4 hacks.  If I count Mrs raes, that would be 10, and the kids 2 more.  So 12.   By hey, I've also got 21 chainsaws in there, so the bikes aren't really the problem.

My two (fixed and tourer)

Dads two (Moulton APB and old British Eagle Randonee)

Mums and Sisters, one each.

however if I can get Dads motorbike fixed and out of the Garage (i.e sold) I might be able to claim the space for a recumbent trike.

Seven

3 mine (Cotic Soul; Fixie Inc Peacemaker; Planet X Kaffenback being finished built the end of this month).

4 Mel's (Revolution MTB with slicks for commuting which she's fallen out of love with; Puch Prince rescued from a police auction which just the other day I put a straight bar on for her to commute with; 50s bike which should be a relatively easy resto job; another Puch rescued from a pile of scrap metal for resto).

Oh, and the weekend after this one we're likely driving to Derby so she can see the colours of the Mercian bikes in the flesh.

There's something wrong with this equation.

Currently 5, 3 are mine (Claud, The Heretic and a Marin Mount Vision Pro), Mrs T's new Raliegh Pioneer and TLD's Gary Fisher Sunspot.  Oh can we count a mini quad bike too, in which case 6.

Mrs T doesn't comprehend the N+1 rule, so it will probably stay at that, even when I get my new bike (which should be the end of this year) as I can only get it if I get rid of one first....

I guess Claud will get the boot to be replaced by a nice Pinarello :)

I've just adjusted my vote after a recount - now 19 plus a mountain bike.

I keep them too long, and they become emotionally attached, and less saleable as the kit has been superceded.

My friend around the corner is far better at stock control, sells them whilst current and never keeps them more than a year or so.

He's currently shifting 10  speed bikes to make room for next year's 11 speed!

Close to "normal"  :) here with five: my Univega roadish bike, my Schwinn Cimarron MTB/tourer (sadly soon to be sold to help pay for the next thing on the list), a Bike Friday Family Tandem, the wife's Specialized Hardrock, and the kid's boat anchor, er, 16" BMX bike.

Noncountables include a Schwinn road frame trying not to become a fixie, the kid's trailer bike (also leaving soon to pay for the tandem), and the Miyata 312 that'd hiding behind my office desk (scrapped 650B conversion project).

8 here.
3 are Mrs Nerds (Trek MTB, Giant flat bar road bike and the 60's Moulton that Andy Gates gave us.  Cheers, Andy! :))
5 are mine (Pipedream MTB, mystery blue fixed, orange Hill Special singlespeed / fixed, Surly Pacer Audax bike and a Moulton APB)
The Moultons are in bits and I'd really like to sell the mystery blue fixed as things are getting out of hand.

I feel very virtuous.  O:-)

I have the Eclipse and the Globe in my studio flat, usually joined by the Bloke's Puch.

In my mum's garage at Bognor there is my very elegant sit-up-and-beg 3-speed Peugeot, for pootling to the shops when I am there.

So three, one of which lives elsewhere, plus the Bloke's.

Five. All inside the flat.

Spesh Roubaix (bedroom)
Pearson Touche (hall)
TSR-Moulton (bedroom)
Nicolai Helius CC (bedroom)
Cotic Soul (airing cupboard)

And there's only me in the flat. Bikes per person, anyone?

None in the house - none of them are house-trained enough to be trusted not to leave tell-tale black chain-link-shaped marks on the carpet.

(On VERY special occasions, i.e. when I'm off at silly o'clock in the morning, and don't want to wake the neighbours by opening the garage door then, the Brommie is allowed in the hall, if folded.)

7 in the garage.  (2 'bents, '80s-style Peugeot racer, Super Galaxy, Discovery Twin tandem, Ridgeback Nemesis commuter, Brompton.)  And a trailer.  No room for a car.

Only me in the house.

Three in a 1 bed flat:

Cougar frame custom road: In the bath
Dawes Audax: Alongside the bath
Ridgeback Neutron: In the (unlocked!) cupboard outside the front door to my flat.

My Sardar lives in Wales, so technically I simply have a well adjusted three bicycles.

And I use the shower!

I do! I live alone, I live in a tiny flat with no space to store a bike unless I got rid of the furniture, and I keep my one and only bike locked on the ground floor of the common stair.

I'm really letting the side down, I only have three, and one of those is in bits scattered around the flat house (I keep on forgetting I moved!).  I do have a BOB as well, and that takes up more room than any of the bikes.

Must try harder...

About 20 in the garage, 5 outside, 2 at work and the tandem is still on holiday...

... but then it depends whether you clasify a pedal powered radiator as a bike:

10 is rather a lot, isnt it..

No.

The DBS commuting bike (Loki as it is a norse for running the messages)
The Ribble - currently set up as a not very fast TT bike.
Fred - a rebuilt and slightly remodelled Fred James frame built up as a fast tourer/winter bike
The Tractor - old heavy MTB but it runs fine
Igor - the tandem
TODM's bike.
Kids bikes: 3x MTB, one cheapy girls bike to be passed on to a better home. And a small Raleigh Pacer Road bike with 20" wheels. Ideal for a 7yo.

Squint the recumbent - a 20" 3 speed rear wheel and a 16" front wheel. Only rideable if you are under about 5'. The front and rear wheels are not in line, in any dimension except time.

I make that (finds fingers and takes socks off) a round dozen.
There is also a trailer.

What is missing?
A track bike.
A road race bike that weighs less than 10kg.
A cyclocross bike.

Quick count up reveals:

Trek, Peugeot, Basso, DynaTech, Falcon, Merlin, DiamondBack x2, and Junior's Embra. That's 9.

Then there's 2 x unbranded alloy framesets, one Emmelle (dismantled but complete) and a 60cm unbranded steel road frame with enough assorted bits to make ALL of them roadworthy. That's 13.

AND I sold 3 frames earlier this year!  :o

I said it was getting out of hand . . .

luv'n'stuff

Dawes custom Reynolds 631 MTB frame (project)
Dawes Discovery (Mrs Woofage's)
2 x Raleigh child bikes

For me

2 x delicious road bikes
1 x steel bike w.guards
1 x fixed
1 x mtb, slicked up for road use

For her

1 x steel road bike (soon to be replaced with a ti/carbon model)
1 x ti bike w.guards
1 x fixed

+ assorted wheels/pedals/parts.

If funds/room were freely available, this number would increase significantly. I could end up like US chat show host Jay Leno who takes his obsession with things automotive to the extreme of having a 17,000 sq.ft facility to house his car/truck collection and his own team of mechanics with a workshop/fabrication facility

Both - Dawes Galaxy Twin.

And the littlun has a wooden trike - does that count?  It does quite a few miles around the garden.

I've got two (Super Galaxy and Mongoose MTB) with one on order (Enigma Ti tourer). When the Enigma arrives, the Super G will go.
Ideally I would like one bike only- the Enigma- but I can see the  point in having an MTB as well so I would consider upgrading the Mongoose even though we go back 15+ years.
Fixed has no appeal- my knees sometimes suffer after football and I really think I've got a restricted speed range sort of engine.
I don't race or TT.
A lightweight road bike and/or a Cross bike has appeal though.
Maybe I should think in terms of the Enigma plus a set of spare wheels with "knobbly" tyres and a racer ?

No  :hand: I still come back to one main bike with the Mongoose for locking up in town.
N+1 doesn't seem to work for me.
Maybe I need to seek another forum.  :-\
I'll say goodbye to those of you that I meet on the DD  :'(

There used to be seven but I have lent two of my bikes out in the interests of encouraging others to cycle  O:-)  ::-)

I have only one bike.  I clicked 'two' because Mrs Lurker's bike also lives in the garage.

If the question had been, "How many bikes do you, personally, ie on your own, not counting anybody else's bikes that might happen to live, lodge or otherwise reside at your house, have?" Then I would have clicked 'one'. :D

Oh god, I think I need to go and lie down in a darkened room.  After I've killed my colleague who insists on slurping his bloody tea and chewing gum with his mouth open. Argggggggggggggh.

Dawes Audax  531C.  ( 2002 ) Probably going to be sold later this year.

Skip bike (Not quite sure of vintage) that is slowly becoming a very nice to ride Carlton Corsa.

Vacancy for N +1 when I can convince Mrs T of the advantages.

Claud Butler fixed (for commuting, general use, light touring)
Offroad tourer (heavy touring)
Giant OCR2 (day rides and fast rides)
Flat pack bike (my GF's - not used much at the moment).

There's certainly room for one more in the house - but I'd have to relegate one of the above to the back yard.

[Deep breath...]

23½ after counting them all up. Half for a trailer.  If a tandem counts as two bikes make it 24½.  Five are trikes and five are recumbents.  Not all of the first group are members of the second group, either.  Altogether 53 different tyres to keep inflated.  Thank goodness I've got a track pump.  Although there is about another half dozen wheels not attached to.  Five are small wheelers, two fold and one collapses (not literally) and two shrink for storage or transportation.  There are five sets of drop handlebars.

I'm sure I could extract other pointless statistics if you were interested.

And (as I am frequently asked) most of them do get ridden regularly.  Some more than others, admittedly.

Do I get a prize?

8 bikes and a BSO in the house/shed/attic.  Another 2 are away with Jasmine (both hers).

The BSO is tip community recycling centre fodder really and should be retired accordingly.

Of the 8, two are tandems and I'm half to blame for each of those purchases.  Then there's my MTB/tourer/commuting bike.  My older MTB which Jasmine rode for a while and now lives in the attic.  Everything else is living room based with 1 fixie, 1 TT bike and 3 different flavours of geared road bike.

Should anticipate a Poisson distrubution here, and lo, there it is. I apper to be below the mean - or, indeed the mode. Anyway.

-Me: the Feremmi SLX. Horrible colour, but wonderful frame, and some nice chrome. Fixed up with miche components.Still wish it wasn't sporting a black chainring.
-Me: the Mercian Audax 531c. Apple green. 10-speed Chorus of mixed vintage.
-Matt my flatmate: British Eagle with Shi*mano compts, bought in a moment of resolution, and unridden. He's a wee bit nervous. Have largely given up trying to coax him out onto it, but he's remains reluctant to sell, so it sits there. He may ride it yet.

Currently 7, but 8 next week due to a bout of n+1  :P

Gen - Genesis Day06. Savagely fast, only comfortable at 100%effort.
Trix - Trek 830 Singletrack. Old school steel mtb that I have lavished much money and time on to keep going. Wears a ridiculously overpowered Hope Mono6ti front brake which cost more than the bike.
Sir Walther - Raleigh Zenith 1980s vintage. Sadly suffering neglect after a partial re-build.
Kinks - Raleigh Quasar. Started off geared, was fixed, then re-geared.
Kneebiter - Apollo something extremely heavy, but with surprisingly good cantis. Too small, but handy for tootling to the shops (lives at my 'rents)
As yet Unnamed - Specialized FSRxc Pro

Emily has:
Mellow Yellow - Professional BSO. Wonky front wheel, doesn't like corners.
Tweeny - B'Twin Sport 2.

Oh boy. Including the shed somewhere else I reckon it comes to 15, if trailer bikes are counted as 1 each. If they're a half, then 14.

New sparkly road bike
Old slightly duller road bike (Peugeot)
Raleigh racer (sort of in pieces)
Orange Evo 2
Orange P7
Orange E6
Ridgeback MX20
Islabike Beinn
Old boy's fake BMX
Purple Hybrid
Rescued (from a dustbin) (but brand new) Kona
Kiddy's purple 12" wheeler
Diamondback old MTB
Trailer bike 1
Trailer bike 2

Doesn't sound like we're too abnormal then    ;D

There are four bikes  at our abode, three purchased by me at some stage, all ridden by partner as I no longer ride.
Two are kept in the house and are in regular use, two are in the garage, from which they are seldom liberated.

# 1 is a Flying Scot, originally from Dales Cycles, Glasgow. Frame rebuilt after my Uxbridge Road encounter. Originally a light tourer in fluo yellow, now has flat bars, is Henry Ford black and is used as David's workhorse. It is now 17 years old.

#2 is a three-year old black 6-speed Brompton.

#3 is an Orbit Harrier. Ordered in haste after prang above, then did prodigious Audax mileage.

#4 is a Decathlon MTB bought 2nd hand in Morocco when Airtours failed to load #1 onto plane for a cycling holiday. Used as decoy when bike needed to be used in dodgy areas.

Do tandems count as one, and does a frame count as half?

Tandems = 1
Frames = 0
Unicycle = 0

That lowers my score from 10 to 5 then, although the 36" wheel unicycle in my spare room definitely looks like it counts!

Whoa! Are you one of the 20+ club?

To tell the truth, they aren't all mine. We had a new years eve party and invited a load of cycling friends when this picture was taken (and it was taken from the second row), but I am one of the the 20+ club If I include the bikes in the shed!

BTW - I had a major tidyup in the garage yesterday. I had to make room for five kayaks and a trailer as well as the bikes, and there appears to be more free space than before!

Garage clearout yesterday...the two fixies are now hanging in the roof space by their rear wheels, with a pulley at the apex for each one.  The Brompton is sitting on top of the freezer.

The only bikes now in the shed are Mrs Z's and Miss Z the elder's.

Thirteen here. Five are mine, two are my wife's, the rest belong to our four kids. All are rideable and all are regularly ridden. A foutreenth (a road bike for our oldest) will be joining the throng by Christmas.

We could add to this a healthy collection of kayaks (5), other boats (4), lawn mowers (4), cars (3), and cats (2).
Title: Naming.

- Mercian Audax 531c. Apple green (lovverly). 10-speed Chorus of mixed vintage.

These two lovelies remain unnamed, and I lack inspiration. Care to partake of a collective naming ceremony?

Five

Donohue swb tourer, no mudguards etc, used in suny weather only
Another Donohue tourer, with mudguards etc, used in bad weather (ie most weekends this year) and for commuting
Airnimal, not used nearly often enough - the chainrings are to big and one day I'll get round to changing them
Ancient Pearson tourer with ye olde down-tube levers, needs TLC
Marin Bear Valley mountainbike, some winters dressed up with pannier frame and megalights and used for commuting, but needs some slick tyres

Too many!

A funky purple Orange Prestige (1991 Vintage) with skinny forks and XT Thumbies (yeah!)

A handsome no-name Steel MTB (1996) in a very convincing Ti look-a-like finish and Raleigh style forks

My daughter's full suspension MTB (weighs as much as a Cunard boat anchor)

Nelson 7005 roadbike (never ridden)

Thorn Audax Mk.3 (Chorus & Centaur)

SJSC Fixed Wheel done up as a single-speed.

And frames hanging up;

Thorn Cyclosportif (my 2007 SR and PBP frame)

Bob Jackson 631 'winter' frame

Bob Jackson 631 'summer' frame (with chrome Tommassini 'Air' forks)

Bob Jackson 631 fixed wheel frameset

At the moment, four (mine) in the garage:

Mystery 1950s frame with Sturmey-Archer AM medium-ratio hub gear, daily ride
2003 Fuji Track, much-modified and resprayed
1993 Cannondale M1000 MTB converted to fixed gear
Brompton S3L

Two in the shed:

Carrera Subway 8 (Mrs Z's)
Specialized Hotrock 16" (Miss Z's)

By coincidence, they all take 1/8" chains, and there's not a derailleur in sight.

Normality will be resumed when the new Hewitt Cheviot is delivered.

The eBay hammer has just fallen on another machine purchase - a 1960s Dawes with some interesting fixtures and fittings  ;D

Given that a few have gone in the last few weeks and few more have arrived .. I think that gets me back to 13 machines + a frame that I have yet to collect  :-[

6 bikes one trike
...

That seems like a reasonable number of bikes(trikes). :)

Welcome to the forum, does the number in your nickname have any significance? (the optimal number of bikes owned by a person maybe? ;D)

Greetings everyone; one of the last refugees from ACF has brought his own brand of minimal wit and intellect over here.

There are 4 bikes in the garage, my Claud Butler Legend, Mrs H's Falcon Explorer, David's mail-order special full suspension MTB and Robert's birthday Silverfox MTB.

Now, how do you use these damn smiley things ?

I've only just noticed this thread and I manged to stop counting before I ran out of fingers and toes, at 18. (19 if we count our kids' first trike!)

2 belong to my brother-in law, 3 each to my son and daughter, 5 to my wife, 4 for me and the shared tandem.

I also have one hidden away at work for those days when it stops raining for long enough for a lunchtime ride.

In the case of these 3 bikes, could the categories be interchangeable but still accurate?   :)
Would a hack / pub bike be a good complement for them?

Thread dredge.

3 bikes (my commuter, wife's bike, daughter's bike) moving to a nearby new storage shed (courtesy of the local council estate over the road).
2 bikes to be sold at some point (Aravis Audax, Colnago Master)

Leaves just two bikes in the house (long distance fixed, Wilier). The money from the Aravis and Colnago will probably go to fund a TT bike.

So, long term plan is just n-1.

The Hewitt tourer and Longstaff (frames) have long, long since gone. In their places are
a Spa Audax and Dolan Dual frames. Most of the componets have survived to be put onto
the replacement frames. The Spa and Dolan were acquired in about 2013.

7 now.  4 (ti fix, commuter, MTB & road) for me, 1 for my wife, and one each for the kids.  There are a couple of scootery-things kicking around too.

Six in assembled form. Two I need to do something with.

Me
Touring - also used for off-road fun (name a niche) bike
Summer road/Audax bike - which gets wet surprisingly often and I don't do enough Audax
Winter commuter bike - which I seem to fix more than the other two so the above get pressed into commuting use.

Mrs trekker
As above except her gravel/adventure/best bike and touring bike are two separate entities and she has a commuter bike for work.

There's my first ever road bike frame under the workbench. A 1990s Peugeot I keep meaning to do something with and my Kona Mountain bike from the 90's which I should offer to a good home really as I don't think I'll ever ride it again.

Currently reduced to three.

Three in my living room
Thorn Mercury - third frame for the same Rohloff
Airnimal Joey Rohloff
Hewitt Ceviot SE - little used, damaged/repaired so like new, a bit surplus to requirements but not worth selling.

I thought I might have contributed to this thread first time round but didn't, it was three then as well, though only one of them is the same frame.

There are still four bikes here though David rehomed the Decathlon and received a Cooper Casablanca a few Christmases ago. I can't ride but David has adopted and modified my Flying Scot and Orbit Harrier.

There's also a Brompton and the Cooper.

Down to 6 now!  Two by getting divorced, but I'm down a proper TT bike and mtb since 10 years ago too.

In order of frequency used this year - elephant bike, tatty singlespeed, tourer, posh road bike, turbo and occasional TT bike, folding bike.

Paul,

I did not swap the Longstaff for a Spa. Even though the Longstaff was made to measure,
the top tube was way too long at 59 cm. I kept on feeling that I was in a Graeme Obree
superman position. I had no problem selling it though. A 54 or 55 cm top tube suits me
(with an 11 or 10 cm stem respectively).

The Hewitt Cheviott (that I was measured up for by Mr Hewitt at the London cycle show when it was held at the Islington Business centre, and had the measurements confirmed a week later at his shop in Preston); although a comfortable ride, he later confirmed to me that the measurements weren't quite right. Check out the multiple headset spacers.

I went on to buy a Hewitt Chiltern (frame), which I subsequently sold, then bought a Spa Audax, plus a Dolan Dual (though not at the same time). I've not bought a complete bike this century; preferring to purchase a frame and transfer components.

Thanks for the reply - yes by "swap" I meant one out one in rather than an exchange...
Unfortunate that you'd have two bikes from people with good reputations for fit and them both be wrong, your Hewitt looks way out, doesn't look like mine at all.

I had to revise my number from the original 8 to 11, as in the last couple of years we've got a second tandem amongst others additions.  The one snag is that the new garage is only about 40% of the size of the old one.

I might have to rationalise a bit...……..

13.

Blimey - time to review our insurance too, I reckon.

And another on the way, that I forgot to include.

They are my pension.
Blimey: 10 years on and we have 1 additional person but 2 fewer bikes.

Although one of those bikes has got 3 saddles.

Oh, but another of those bikes isn’t ours (the forum road bike for kids).

I lost my lovely garage in the move so we don’t have the space we had 10 years ago. Luckily, the mortgage is higher here so I couldn’t afford more bikes anyway  ::-)

Oh boy. Including the shed somewhere else I reckon it comes to 15, if trailer bikes are counted as 1 each. If they're a half, then 14.

New sparkly road bike
Old slightly duller road bike (Peugeot)
Raleigh racer (sort of in pieces)
Orange Evo 2
Orange P7
Orange E6
Ridgeback MX20
Islabike Beinn
Old boy's fake BMX
Purple Hybrid
Rescued (from a dustbin) (but brand new) Kona
Kiddy's purple 12" wheeler
Diamondback old MTB
Trailer bike 1
Trailer bike 2

Doesn't sound like we're too abnormal then    ;D
Good grief.

New sparkly road bike
Just clicked through 25000 miles

Old slightly duller road bike (Peugeot)
Still hanging on the garage wall waiting for the day when mini-hatler needs a crappy bike for uni.

Raleigh racer (sort of in pieces)
Freecycled.

Orange Evo 2
Orange E6
Both still to be seen regularly bouncing along the South Downs Way

Orange P7
Still in regular utility use by Mrs hatler, either commuting or runs to the allotment.

Ridgeback MX20
Donated to friends at the 'van

Islabike Beinn
Sold to friends at the 'van. Now on it's fourth child and just completed 70 miles in France over a weekend with a seven year old aboard.

Old boy's fake BMX
Long since sold (for not much).

Purple Hybrid
Left out the front of the house with a 'Please take me away' sign.Gone in less than 10 minutes.

Rescued (from a dustbin) (but brand new) Kona
Still in use as the general purpose utility bike / trailer lugger / loan out bike for anyone who stays.

Kiddy's purple 12" wheeler
Donated for general use for all and sundry at the 'van

Diamondback old MTB
Hanging on the garage wall waiting for the day when mini-hatler's first uni bike is nicked. Alsorolled out if we need to loan out a bike for use on the South Downs Way.

Trailer bike 1
Trailer bike 2
Both sold to mates at the 'van

However, we now have to add on : -

Spesh Dolce
Outgrown by little miss hatler - awaiting disposal

Moda something
mini-hatler's cyclo-crossbike

Spesh carbon something
Bought from spesh otp for mini-hatler, in regular use as his runabout and occasional longer run

Bianchi 928
Little miss hatler's best bike - she lurves it

Trek Domane
Mrs hatler's road bike

Orange E8
mini-hatler's MTB

Orange Diva
Little miss hatler's MTB

Rounding off at 14 again !   We're nothing if not consistent.

(We've also bought and sold an Islabike Luath, and an Islabike Beinn 700 in that time. The Beinn was new, we ran two kids through it and sold it for about £10 less than we bought it for. The Luath was second hand when we got it and it sold for about £20 less. Oo yes, and a freecycled Ridgeback MX24 and an anonymous folder, both of which I got running, tidied up and sold for a few quid.)

ETA. Also bought and sold a Spesh Dolce Elite (Mrs hatler's fist foray into the world of road bikes) and we also have a temporary stand-in Trek something MTB originally for little miss but now on permanent loan at the 'van to one of the Blackberry Gang or for us if one of little miss's mates needs it. Which means we have 15.

Three Moultons in the garage stacked and chained up behind the car: ATB including optional tandem insert and e-assist, Double Pylon, Bridgestone Moulton.

Original F-frame Moulton in the shed, not used but I bought it new in 1965 for 26 guineas.

The Bridgestone was not strictly necessary, but I enjoy riding it and the fact that it is a (relatively) modern update on the brilliant original F-frame design.

Since 2008 things have changed somewhat. One person has moved out. One person has turned up. We are currently spread over 2 houses.

So.

We have 3 tandems, though sadly only one in regular use

2 Dahon folders

1 ti fast bike

TGL's 2 bikes

1 balance bike that the duck still loves

2 bikes that the duck has grown out of

the Duck's islabike beinn 20

clarion's 3speed fixed

clarions's 2 fancy bikes

clarion's tourer

my tourer

my winter bike

my vintage bike

one trailerbike

hmmm 19 and a half I think.

The mountain bike in my dad's garage has moved on to my sister's. My nephew was riding it but I think he is now riding clarion's old tourer.

Well there's just my wife and myself, both of us keen cyclists. So ...

1 x road bike each - Specialized Roubaix and BH something or other
1 x CX/commuter each - Pinnacle 3 and Genesis Crox de Fer
1 x rigid MTB each - Cotic Solaris and Stooge Mk 1
1 x fat bike each - Singular Puffin and Surly Wednesday
1 x full suspension bike (me) - Salsa Spearfish
1 x HT MTB (her) - Cotic Soul
1 x singlespeed road (me) - On-One Pompetamine frame
1 x singlespeed road frame (her) - custom steel frame

I make that 11 plus one frame. All are in the house as we've no garage. All (apart from the frame) get regular use. Looking at some of the above, we are amateurs ;D

2 x 'fast' bikes (♂♀)
Commuter (♀)

Ice (♀)
2 x frames (♂♀)

Anyway. Twelve, and working on the thirteenth:

1 x roadbike [Raleigh Triathlon]
1 x randonneur/roadbike with mudguards and dynamo lights [Koga Miyata Roadspeed]

I'm sorry I didn't do a list 10 years ago. I'm going to guess at:

Dawes Super Galaxy Tandem
Massi team Comp (the Gay Disco)
Kaffenback
Scott MTBs (x2)
Claud Butler Dalesman
Specialised Dolce
Ridgeback 24
Wooden LikeaBike (balance bike)
Pompino
Longstaff audax
Trek WSD road bike (v small)
Brompton

I can't think what the other one was.

in 2018, 6 remain from the '08 family:

Scott MTBs (x2)
Specialised Dolce
Ridgeback 24
Longstaff audax
Brompton

Plus:

Mercian KOM
Thorn me 'n' U2
Freddie Grubb (fixated)
Ridgeback MTB
Peugeot (FRBFK)
A forgettable hybrid from Grandma that no-one uses

There, now I won't be so stumped when this thread is resurrected in 2028!

My wife has a bike that she has ridden once in the last 9 years.
My daughter has a (more frequently used) islabike.

I have:
1 fixie (used regularly for TTs)
1 carbon road bike (used for road and turbo)
1 steel road bike (for sale, never used)
2 BMX - one semi permanently loaned out, another as a donor for a 2 wheel recumbent of the future - neither used
1 Folder (Raleigh 20 - used very rarely)
1 MTB - used once this year! :(
1 homebrew trike (rideable but not finished).

So if you include all of them as bikes, that's 10, 8 of which are mine!

One in the house, three in the barn, three in the workshop.  CBA enumerating them.

I could have sworn it was only 11 but I just listed them and there are 13.  One is technically my daughter's, although it's used as a test bed for Raleigh Twenty mods, and one hasn't yet been assembled (away for respray, bought as a bit of a wreck) so maybe it is 11.

Two Bromptons is a bit excessive, but I felt like a Brompton project that year and NSTN's SO sold me one at a very good price.  It didn't really need enough work.  I'd like to convert it to an S-type eventually because climbing hills on an M-type is horrible.

They've all been ridden properly this year except the titanium Brompton S3E-X - but I may use it on the FNRttS -  and the dark red clubman, which will be broken out for the last few weeks' evening rides, because it's fast and has full lighting gear.

I like rescuing bikes and rebuilding them.  It's part of the hobby.  I knew a senior manager at work who restored a different vintage Land Rover EVERY YEAR,  just to put it into context.  if only resprays were cheaper.

6

My two (fixed and tourer)

Dads two (Moulton APB and old British Eagle Randonee)

Mums and Sisters, one each.

however if I can get Dads motorbike fixed and out of the Garage (i.e sold) I might be able to claim the space for a recumbent trike.

Changed now to 3. I moved out from my parents so mum, dads and sisters bikes don't count any more. However I have obtained n+1 in the form of the van nic rather than a recumbent.

I'm sorry I didn't do a list 10 years ago. I'm going to guess at:

Dawes Super Galaxy Tandem
Massi team Comp (the Gay Disco)
Kaffenback
Scott MTBs (x2)
Claud Butler Dalesman
Specialised Dolce
Ridgeback 24
Wooden LikeaBike (balance bike)
Pompino
Longstaff audax
Trek WSD road bike (v small)
Brompton

I can't think what the other one was.

in 2018, 6 remain from the '08 family:

Scott MTBs (x2)
Specialised Dolce
Ridgeback 24
Longstaff audax
Brompton

Plus:

Mercian KOM
Thorn me 'n' U2
Freddie Grubb (fixated)
Ridgeback MTB
Peugeot (FRBFK)
A forgettable hybrid from Grandma that no-one uses

There, now I won't be so stumped when this thread is resurrected in 2028!

A recumbent! That was the other bike I had in 2008.

Thanks for the nudge, Matthew.

I see I recorded 13 bikes in 2008 (for a family of 6). It peaked at 21 a few years later. Now, the family has left - grown up, and the ex found someone better - and I'm down to just 9. If someone buys my two bikes in For Sale just now, I'll be buying one more so 8 will be the final result. One of those is my daughter's. So 7 for me. I'm not sure I could bring myself to go for fewer!

I am going to have to do a count; the family claim I have 20 but it's not really as much as that if one counts only relatively complete bikes! It's probably several more if you count pairs of wheels - but then a few of them are split as well.
So:
 Vitus 992 (summer bike)
 Gitane racer (winter bike)
Moser 51,151 (sort of pre-87 thing now in one piece)
Peugeot Course (650B tourer and everyday utility bike)
Anonymous generic late 50's frame built up as a vehicle for a 1937 Super Champion dérailleur
 VTT
 Radius Dino recumbent (basically complete)
M-in-laws vintage 3 speed which was adopted but never ridden by the girls
Lo's now very elderly folder that she rode when she was 13 (40 odd years ago!)
Jourde set up as flat bar tourer (but a genuine Marcel all the same)
Phillipa's VTT (Specialized Rockhopper, now very old and going to be a Parisian commuter)
Gwen's VTT (rubbish recycled bso with italian threads and standards throughout)
the first bike of the girls Decathlon with 16" wheels still in fine nick, needs air in the tyres but not used for the last 15 years (or perhaps longer)
the first VTT with 24" wheels (gift from Tonton Paul so it will be kept forever 'n ever)

 So that's 14

Add in 1 unicycle, 3 vintage frames stripped (of which one is creased and will never see the road; it donated the Super Champion mech) and 1 clunky anvil shaped VTT frame that is waiting to be cut up for a recumbent trike project ' and Cat's old Raleigh frame which is hanging on a nail in the garage. That's the 20 for the family!

Forgot 2 BSO donations that will be donated on as they are complete and working and just wasting space chez moi - I think they have to be entered in the calculation for n+1 purposes.

Total 16 but it will be 15 in a fortnight's time when Phil starts her job in Ile de France.

Forgot Coline's VTT but then that's only a squatter really! Also forgot the tandem but that is being robbed for bits so it only counts in the family calculation.

I should add that they are stored usually separated from at least one wheel, for reasons of space! (Currently the Peugeot, Vitus and Gitane are sitting on the ground, the rest are hung up).

My count in 2008 was 15 + a unicycle - the depleted fleet is now:

Galaxy tourer from 1975 (still got it from 2008)
Claud Butler Audax early 80s- as a 3 speed fixie (ditto)
Van Nicholas Yukon tourer Ti 2014
Van Nicholas Ventus road bikeT 2015
Dawes Audax Giro 600 late 90s
Raleigh Banana (well that's the frame, built up as a s/s pub bike) from the mists of time
Brompton 2003
Orbea Gain electric road bike 2018
Peugeot mixte (Mrs robgul's) 1980s

... and oodles of parts and "stuff" which I am in the process of cataloguing to list for sale in the next month or so.

Oh, and if you include bikes that I own but my grandchildren have there are 1 classic Pashley trike and 8 Islabikes from a balance to a small-framed 700c machine (no, no not 8 grandchildren, just the 4 - the bikes are either in use, or in stock awaiting use as age and size change - and being passed down to siblings)   When the bikes emerge from the bottom of the chain I have them back to re-sell.

10 is rather a lot, isnt it..

Down to 6 now!  Two by getting divorced, but I'm down a proper TT bike and mtb since 10 years ago too.

In order of frequency used this year - elephant bike, tatty singlespeed, tourer, posh road bike, turbo and occasional TT bike, folding bike.
Did you sell the Moulton?  I remember riding it about 100 yards in a Cambridge industrial estate.  As far as the ride quality was concerned, I only remember that the saddle was very hard, but my arse was sore after the Dun Run.

Current stable:

Fuji Supreme (summer bike; really too big for me so the intention is to replace it with something new and shiny and disc-braked over the winter)
Pinnacle Arkose (winter/"gravel" bike, currently in off-road mode with 43c tyres and an 11-40 cassette!)
Merida Reacto 400 (turbo bike - except I never use my turbo...)
Carrera Hellcat (MTB/shopping bike)
Brompton (belongs to the boyfriend and hasn't been ridden at all since before we moved up north, 5 years ago )

Only 5, of which 4 are mine - not too bad! :P

In the house as we don't have a garage or shed.  Luckily the current Mrs Socks is very understanding and the largest bedroom is available as a bike shed:

Vintage Moultons from the 1960's to 1970's - 7 ish
Dahon folder
Raleigh Stowaway c 1975
Modern Moulton spaceframes - 4
Recumbents (2 wheel) - 4

that seems to be 17 or so, I need to do a stock take.

What's a VTT?

French for MTB

Except that a vtt doesn't make any claims about going up or down mountains. MTB to me means motor torpedo boat!

There is also a vtc (vélo tout chemin) which is what you know as a hybrid (and must be starting to cross over with what the yanks call an allroad bike except that a vtc frequently has a sus fork, like a hybrid).

Didn't know whether to count the three balance bikes.  Otherwise, seven - but three are for ornamental purposes only (shed bike, wife's grandfather's 100 yo bike, late friend's fixed bike - none of which are my size) and only two of the others are mine (and I can barely ride the bent).

quite a few bikes including sufficient in ‘small’ for the ladies in the family! No large male sized math at the moment, although the yellow peril works well on tracks if not downhill

I found space to hang another two in the garage tonight.  That leaves just three in the less secure shed and the Brompton in the house.

The shed currently holds the following:

Surly Ice Cream Truck
HP Velotechnik speedmachine
Brompton
Merckx EM525
Gazelle Tour Pop
Transition klunker
Calibre Astronut dirt jump bike

I have a Sonder Camino frame on order that I'm going to build up into a sensible commuter from spare parts as none of the above fits that bill. The gazelle is great but my God it weighs a ton and if you have to ride into a strong head wind you may as well climb into a bivvy and wait for the wind to die down.

My GF has 3 bikes.

I have another one in bits at the moment but it's going as soon as it's finished.  Unfortunately spraying a frame is very weather-dependent.

-Cannondale CAAD 12 - racing bike #2 (52x36-11x28, not for hills/mountains, as soon as I wear out the cassette I’m
replacing it with a 12-25 cassette)
   -Specialized Diverge - gravel bike
-Bombtrack Arise - single speed cyclo cross bike
-Surly Cross Check - touring bike #1
-Santos Trekking Lite - touring bike #2 (I should sell this one…)
-Pub bike - 20kg of steel, one gear, coaster brake, indestructible

I'm definitely in the serial collector/hoarder/restorer group. And I can always justify the need for adding yet another one!

Merlin road bike, which I love - and use a lot in summer. Which admittedly doesn't happen a lot in Halifax.
An older, but still very light Trek oclv road bike.
Genesis CdF in 931, which is my go-to bike for most stuff these days. I'm riding PBP on this, plus my SR series.
Trek TT bike, very pointy. It only comes out a few times per year now, though. I have a pointy hat to match!
2 x Peugeot Perthus Pro, I restored both, and had a lot of fun in the process. Repainting/redoing the decals was really satisfying.
Colnago Master - its a beautiful thing, but I don't ride it very often.
Mountain bike with gears and suspension (Marin Mt Vision). I used to use it a lot, but it takes so much time to clean/sort.
Single speed & rigid mountain bike, which is a Kona Explosif underneath it all. Lovely to ride, and not much slower than the Marin. And doesn't need half as much cleaning!
3 x Viking bikes from the early 1960s, again bikes I had a lot of fun restoring. Sunny days, Eroica.
A 1976 Falcon with Campag NR that I can't quite work out what to do with.
An Airnimal that I restored for a good friend, but seem to have inherited. Good for trips away.
Tandem, which needs work. Its set up with flat bars and chunky tyres, which isn't the riding we do now.
Mrs S has a Planet X road bike
Little S x 2 have 3 bikes between them.
And after that its mostly projects: a track bike, an old race bike, a couple more Peugeot frames, a BMX, a carbon fibre singlespeed project...

I'm not sure whether I like making and restoring bikes more than riding them. I'm hoping to braze up my first frame this year as a test-run.
