Sounds like there's a real possibility that it could complete its journey in a smidge under 5 years then.

Remember that it cannot travel by motorised transport where it is possible to cycle the same journey.

If we can't come up with a way to continue its journey without resorting to a train, maybe Wowbagger could, on reaching John O'Groats, take it to Orkney, put it inside a sealed food bag and bury it.

I just had a thought !!!!!

Once its journey is complete why not give it a new life on the Geocaching circuit? You can buy a "token" and then track it's journey via the Geocache website.

Do we have any forumites who combine Cycling and "caching"?

I think Andy Gates does/used to do some geocaching. Also maybe Francis wotsit of Stroud?

But absolutely no way can Wowbagger bury the baton. If it's to die in Orkney, it surely has to be given a Viking funeral with FIRE.

Absolutely! Like The Flying Dutchman, or that owd bloke I always saw riding round the Peaks, the baton should keep travelling for all eternity.

I think there are plans for us to collect it from Dundee on our trip from Edinburgh to Orkney, which starts on 17th July - at least, I leave home on 17th July. JenM has plotted a route and we have some camp sites in mind.

We was there last week , but Dundee marked the apex of our journey so there would have been no point in picking up the baton.

We are not going to JoG. Jen is going to Dunnett Head which is the most northerly point on the UK mainland and therefore beats JoG. That is Plan A. Either she leaves it there or it comes back to England by train.

Alternatively I could invoke rule 17b (iv)* and take it to Hoy where it can spend the rest of eternity gazing at its big brother.

*Rule 17b (iv): Where a Baton has become becalmed for a period of not less than1 year, single track rail transport may be used provided that the cost of the single fare is less than 10 pence per mile and the current Baton holder has twice carried the said Baton over passes exceeding 2000'.
