My recollection is that HK stands for "helium knickers" - a reference to the good lady's hill-climbing ability.

It would be a tad embarrassing if I were wrong about that!

I'm confused by this HK. I've seen a few references to HK in the "have you been out today" thread (which is perhaps so big and fundamental a thread it's almost a board to itself!) and I seem to remember they're a she, so to speak, and a she who seems to be well enough known by forumites to refer to as HK, but is not a YACFer herself.
She is a YACF-er, but is usually riding her bike. Big miles girl.

LW&B- I hope the presence of Casper in that picture means she finished, in time, and had a good ride??

Nope. She DNFed the 1000 due to back problems and finished the 'Ride of Redemption' 300 instead, with a lot of other DNFers.

Dave, I think Julian was supposed to be doing that ride.  How, did he get on?

This has a similar feel to one I took at Beverly in 2005.

You can't blame the people who do the rides for not being young. I've been interested in cycling in Taiwan for a while. The distance of 1,000km around the Island makes it ideal for a single ride, the blogger I linked to on my Cycling and Ideology thread had some interesting insights. Audax in the UK exists despite the culture, in Taiwan it seems to be in step with the culture. Aspects of that culture are fairly alarming historically, but things seem to have changed a great deal in recent years.

One explanation for higher participation rates in Asian countries might be that fertility rates have fallen off a cliff.
Quote
The fertility rate of Taiwan is one of the lowest fertility rates ever recorded in the world in historical times. It reached its lowest level in 2010: 0.90 children per female. In 1980, the rate was still well above replacement level (2.515), but it dropped to 1.88 in 1985, 1.81 in 1990, 1.78 in 1995, 1.68 in 2000, 1.12 in 2005
Coupled with apartment living it might be creating a demand for time-consuming outdoor activities.

This classic of the genre is missing from the thread - it has all the right ingredients: thousand yard stare, no eye contact and general air of weirdness.

The Italian fertility rate is down to 1.4, there seems to be a link between not having children to care for and the commitment to hobbies such as Audax.

I really want to go back to Taiwan. The riding is fantastic. When I was there I was the only weirdo on a road bike. Obviously that's an exaggeration, in my two years there I did see another guy once when I was on my motorbike.

It's great to see the bike shop I used to go to to order tyres, inner tubes and lycra is thriving, seemingly on roadies. Sam liked the high end stuff but spent most of his time being amazed at how Giant etc. kept on churning out cheaper and cheaper MTBs that were of course practically all he sold.

My introduction to Taiwan was cycling 200km at night from T'aipei to T'aichung at the end of the Chinese New Year holiday without a map. Incense, fireworks, gongs, lanterns and five million drivers going the other way - any which way they could. On the back of two days flying to get there it was a mad, hallucinatory experience.

By the way, round the island rides, audax or tours, are quite impressive feats. It's lumpy up the east side!

The Philippino ladies on one of the PBP's might suggest you take in a side trip to the Philippines as well.
