Poacher's Choice
« on: 08 December, 2009, 10:44:08 pm »
I think I have a new favourite beer.  Absolutely perfect for winter.

:D

(From Badger; 5.7% which is stronger than I usually like, but... I'll make an exception for this one.)

I assume that's bottled?

Have to keep eyes open for it on draft.  We have several Badger pubs round here

I've won a litre bottle of McGrath's Irish Cream in an office raffle.....

Cream, white wine and "spirit"......

Please, someone, tell me it's not as vile as it sounds......

Some of my faves,
 * Harveys Old Ale - many moons ago when a student, this would drag me into pubs frequented by locals who would tut and moan at the incomers - but it was worth it.
 * Wadworth Old Timer - rather stronger but rather good. Best from the wood and very moreish.

Both winter ales of course, don't try to get them beyond April.

Fuller's London Pride

(don't laugh, it's the only good ale around these parts...)

Nowt wrong with Pride :)

Two bottles (one for me and one for Mrs C) waiting downstairs on your recommendation!

Badger beers come in all sorts of strengths and flavours. None of the flavours are subtle! I do enjoy them all though, with Blandford Fly being a particular favourite.

We tried it last night.  OK, but not a favourite.  It's got damsons and liquorice in it.  This left me thinking it was too sweet and Mrs C saying it had a bitterness she didn't like!

Definitely worth a try, though.

If you like IPA (& I do) and strong beers, try Marstons' Old Empire. Bottled and available from Sainsburys. 5.7% and hopped to buggery.

If you've not tried it before, you really should try Guninness Foreign Extra Stout. In small bottles and 7.5%, so not for the faint hearted. Hoppy again, but what an aftertaste! Be wary of the Nigerian stuff my local Tescos are flogging. It's a very different beer.

I drank quite a lot of Adnams Bitter in Thorpeness the other month.  I was very disappointed by Adnams Broadside on draught (although this was after a Dun Run and I was freezing cold at the time), although it's good in bottles.

I too am loving Poachers. Luckily I live a 5 minute stroll from the Badger brewery shop so supply is plentiful (although Tesco next door is cheaper >:()

I've just tried a bottle of Badgers Golden Glory.  It says on the bottle it has a peach and melon aroma  ::-)

Fark me they aren't kidding!  It's delicious!   Off to supermarket to empty the shelf..
