The things Triathletes don't know.
« on: 08 July, 2011, 12:56:28 pm »
A young female triathlete did her first Southport club 10 last night. She was studying at Imperial, so her top told us. She rode 26:31, so we all praised a very creditable first effort. She asked what the record was and who held it. 19:01 Bradley Wiggins is the answer.
She asked if he'd been riding tonight and could we point him out.

Apart from the not-knowing-the-Tour part, that's not too surprising.  Triathlon races often have national elites taking part: it's part of the buzz and fun, to be Accrington Stanley on the same pitch as Man U.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Must be good for fostering a sense of community, but could be a bit hazardous on the road.

btw, should we call you Stanley from now on? ;D

I'm never terribly surprised when experts exhibit a big gap in their knowledge ever since, during the World Chess Championship final against Karpov, Viktor Korchnoi has to ask the arbiter whether he was allowed to castle when his rook was attacked.

That's the sort of stuff that I teach all my pupils within a few weeks of starting the game.

Or, possibly, that was something that particular triathlete didn't know, as opposed to triathletes in general.

Did anyone hear Wiggo's interview after he crashed out?  His 4 year old child had told him down the phone that Bradley Wiggins was out of the Tour - he hadn't made the connection between "Bradley Wiggins" and "Dad".

One to put on the TriStars youth development squad, that one.

We popped over to see the Le Mans  - Chateauroux stage (Stage 7) and managed to get into the village at the start.  We went later to Nouans-Les-Fontaines, about 10k before Wiggo crashed out.  Didn't see him either time, unfortunately. :-\

I saw Brad with his kids as I was walking across Sainsbury's car park in Cardiff on a Sunday afternoon about 3 years ago. The logical part of my brain kept telling me "it can't be him, must be somebody who looks a bit like Brad -  what would he be doing here on a Sunday afternoon?" It was him, the GB track team had been training at Newport, and I really regret that I didn't go up and shake his hand.  ::-)

Of course.  My complete lack of ability in running and swimming shouldn't be an issue ;D

Don't talk daft lad.  Where would you find someone who willingly runs so slowly that my riding won't be letting them down? ;D

We're two thirds of a team already, then!  We just need someone who can stagger about a bit, and we're ready

My family went to see that stage too (mainly for the swag)! I'm stuck here in blighty. Thay have some un-named something as a treat for me, but won't let on as to what it is!

Johnny Hoogerland's kegs ?
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I got interested in trying a duathlon at some point until I found out that it was the swimming that got dropped from the three not the running.  Swimming and cycling I can do (well, a bit, anyway).  Running is just too painful.

If there was an event a bit like a triathlon but where the running was replaced by e.g. having a nice piece of cake I'd be interested though.  ;D
