Also, Norway, if there's snow on the ground and you can see anything of the sun (there have been glimpses) and it's not near the horizon - I think it's safe to assume that where the sun is, is roughly south.
No?

No. I was camping on snow just off that railway line [1]  in May. 24hour daylight.

[1] On Hallingskårvet, just across the A7 from Hardangavidda.

The HinduCowGirl channel on Youtube is fantastic (drivers eye view of Norway train journeys). I'll sometime just put one of the 2hr+ videos on the TV when I'm reading a book or something. Very relaxing.

I was watching one of those - Oslo- Aal thinking it would go past where I used to live. Unfortunately they started building an express line tunnel when I left so it goes underground out through the suburbs apart from popping out of the ground at Sandvika and Asker

I used to love travelling on the wee 3-coach units between Glasgow & Edinburgh via Stirling, because from the front seat in the front carriage you could see straight out past the driver. Never did a crossword or read a book on those trains.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

I like the tailgunner position at the back.

Haven't tried that one yet, but will give it a go.  One assumes it's an easier seat to grab than the front.

How about, on a slight tangent, a family trip by train (six of them) from West Sussex to Hong Kong?

The USAnians do it too.  Looks daft, but massively reduces incidents caused by drivers not paying attention.  Pretty clever, I reckon.

You can imagine:

"Ooh, look!!? (pointing) A tractor!!"

Or:

". . .  something beginning with 'T'"
(pointing) "Tree!"
"Correct. My turn."

More train goodness. Check out this map of Britain (most of) England and Wales showing current and disused railway lines. The amount of disused lines is quite remarkable.

Perhaps better than that, http://www.railmaponline.com/UKIEMap.php

That has every* railway in the UK ever, including mine tramways and all sorts of minor railways.  The downside is it doesn’t mark old stations, but it sends you down the rabbit hole of researching each lines, and http://www.disused-stations.org.uk is an excellent partner.

* I’ve not found anything missing, and plenty of stuff I didn’t know about, YMMV of course.
