Did it last year.  It was -6c at the start but the route soon warms you up!  Did encounter some ice during the day but made it round, eventually, and sat eating soup and rolls in John's dining room at 9.30pm!

Unfortunatley missed the summer version that he ran in June.

May be there for this one.

May do this one if forecast is ice-free.  I'm not doing icy roads, it's no fun at all.

I've done this event twice - 2005 and 2006.  IIRC it was the latter that started in a storm, and an awful lot of entrants didn't turn up.  In the event the weather turned benign on both occasions and it was a most enjoyable route - a bit more urban than most, but enjoyable nevertheless..

First time I entered I was not particularly enamoured of the routesheet - it's more like a commentary with multiple instructions on a line and not a lot of distances on it.  But in the event it's fine - accurate and perhaps surprisingly easy to follow.

No commitment yet, but I might be there on the day.  Need to check with SWMBO.

I rode the Tinsel Lanes last year:

Tinsel Lanes

Having said I'll ride it again - perhaps I could do both the SBWW instead. It's a little nearer for me to the start.

Might hedge my bets and enter both - for £4 extra, I get the choice of ride - and outsider option of doing both.

Yep, 2006 was the one with the shite weather at the start.  I got horribly lost after dropping to the back of the field with an early Fairy Visitation, ran out of front tyre rubber and had a third p+nct+r+ on the way up the Hogs Back, at which point I turned round and went straight back to the start.

2005 was my first experience of a December 200.

2006 was the year I looked out the window and stayed in bed.

Fancy a Faccombe 2 ride? (I appreciate that may sound ruder than intended)

I have a pass for this one and, if it's not icy (I don't do ice..I don't do ice), I'm up for this one.

If I can be arsed to do a December 200, it will be a DIY, so I shall be giving this a miss.  Hope the weather is good.

Anyone got any idea how hilly it is? How does it compare to the Upper Thames?

Very similar. With a similar kick or two at the end.

My Fugawi Tracks say that the South Bucks WW is a bit harder than the Upper Thames (which had long flat stretches) and is identical overall to the Winton 200 (Winchester CTC).  The Winton 200 isn't hard at all though.

Looks like there's a slog out of Alton but I think the weather will play a bigger factor than any hills.

Got half way round last year but two tumbles on black ice - in the middle of the day - dampened my enthusiasm.

But I do remember it being a nice route...

Warning for GPS users: I've just checked the routesheet for this and the new-for-2009 section (around Savill Gardens) doesn't seem to feature on the Bikely route.

Bicycle Path - South Bucks Winter Warmer 2009 at Bikely.com

I've done this one but there were a few bits I  wasn't sure about due to the lack of km markers on the route sheet.

I seem to remember that Ron rode to and from the start last year - probably couldn't get enough of the ice and the frost....

Blimey, I know 5-day forecasts are not the most reliable of beasts, but I'm not liking what metcheck is promising: near freezing overnight, rain all day, and southerly gusts up to 25mph.

Repeats to self: it's all good training for cycling in Wales, it's all good training for cycling in Wales..........

Will ride, whatever the weather.  But that forecast plain sucks.  Or should that be blows.

Nice tailwind for the 2nd half of the ride you mean.

And relaaaax....

Weather forecast has changed somewhat on Metcheck.  Whereas it was looking challenging, it's now looking little more than an irritant.  Which is nice.

Yeah.. except they had it skewing to the SW in the afternoon  ::-).
And now it's down as swinging to the West for the afternoon, and back to southerly in time for the finish ::-) ::-) ::-)

I have also plotted out the route

Thanks for this, makes life much easier.  Tallies with my recollection that it has long stretches of benign rural roads, punctuated with a handful of climbs.

Am I remembering correctly that JC reversed the route so that you now see the system of locks over the Thames at Mill End in daylight?  If so, will be the first time I've seen those rather than simply hearing them crashing about me.
