Audaxers with Physics A level
« on: 11 December, 2009, 10:39:57 pm »
See this post -
Another magazine bash against audax

I'm off to check what proportion of the population has a Physics A level . . .

And yes, I voted yes to both.

[Edit]
For those not from England or Wales, equivalent qualifications will be accepted. For those unfamiliar with our education system - "A" level is the qualification required for entering university, normally in three or four subjects.

Yes to both. Although the audaxing has been of the armchair variety of late.

Since this is in A&CS my guess is you won't necessarily get a representative number of the last two options ;)

Actually, I strongly suspect that audax has a disproportionate number of Physics PhDs...

The Google is a bit weak in this one. As a foreigner unfamiliar with the British educational system I wonder what this Physics A Level is. Is it the secondary school level of physics that allows you to enter technical sciences studies at universities?

O Level is taken at age 16, (now called GCSE), A Level at age 18 and used for Uni Qualification. Some people leave school at 16 htough

A levels are taken usually at the age of 18 in a very small number of subjects after two years specialised study.

My A levels were in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

I can't ride Audaxes any more...

I did not vote.

There's a possibility of self-selection or other bias in this rigorous and highly scientific study given that it's only open to members of an Internet forum. :)

Hrm, I guess I qualify as both then. Bugger. (I started mechanical engineering on a university once)
Hellymedic: "a very small number of subjects" is still undefined.

I can spot physics "A" level students by their handwriting.  True.

I entered and passed 4 A Levels in 1986, that was considered high in my town at the time.  (Pure Maths, Applied Maths, Physics, Engineering Drawing)

"a very small number of subjects" is still undefined.

Usually three, sometimes four.

To age 16 I studied 10 subjects to 'O' level grade, then specialised aged 16-18 in Maths, Physics & Chemistry.  My school also allowed one to enter the 'General Studies' A-level which as it sounds is a broad and non-taught exam - a cross between general knowledge, reasoning and ability to think.

So I have 4 'A' levels, 3 in academic subjects.

Not mine. You'd not be able to read it ;)

We had a lecturer at university who wrote with his right hand and erased with his left as he went.

I'm saying yes to both, although being Scottish it's Higher Physics that I've got.

I did not specify how many subjects are studied at A Level as it varies. Three is a norm, but many people study more. I do not believe universities are allowed to demand more than three as an entry requirement, though they can specify minimum grades.

Nope, wasn't born in Britain so don't know what "A level" is. And my physique aint A level either. But did study enough physics required for an MS degree whtever that means.

My Baccalaureat subjects (in order of weight) were Mathematics (5), Physics (5), Biology (3), French (3), English (2), German (1), Philosophy (1), History and Geography (1 each?), Sports (1) and a technological subject (1).

I have audaxed in the past. Don't have the time anymore so like Hellymedic I did not vote.

It would appear to me that audax does have a high number of technically and science-minded people.

My school didn't offer General Studies, I never felt cheated. The Associated Examining Board did actually award me an 'alternative award'. Mathematics. I sat Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and did papers 1,2,3,4. Papers 1 & 3 were used for the combined subject - Mathematics so they awarded that to based on my scores for those two papers.  so I suppose I could say I have 5 A Levels, three in Maths but really it was 3 for the price of 2.

You qualify. I've edited the poll to add "or equivalent".
