Title: Nobby Stiles (1942 - 2020)
Post by: Wowbagger on 30 October, 2020, 04:24:39 pm
I recall quite a bit about his playing - the world cup and marking Eusebio out of a European club match. Possibly the most memorable moment for me was his toothless dance raising the cup aloft after England's 1966 triumph.

Here's someone else's resume: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPgzr1Vle20&ab_channel=ziggystardust405

I'm really surprised to find he only won 28 caps.

He's done OK for someone namechecked in a Half Man Half Biscuit song.

He is one third of one of our favourite driving/camping games. "Who am I thinking of?"

Mark Lawrenson thought very highly of him.

He used to say he had to do one thing - "get the ball and give it to Bobby". Simple when said like that.

Yes, his England career was pretty short - primarily because Ramsey prefered Alan Mullery in the central/holding midfield role subsequently.
He went to MExico in 1970, but never got a kick. And that ws very much that.

Ramsey was very good at picking players to do 'a job' - something that Jack Charlton carried forward.
I remember JC recounting the time when Ramsey picked him for England and Chalrlton asked him:
'Why have you picked me'?
'I don't always pick the best players, but try to pick the best team.'

Only three left now from that team -[possibly even the squad, but I can't be bothered to look :-)] - George Cohen, Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst.

Nice read.

"He was such a character. Before games, he’d be walking around the dressing room with his boots on, his socks on, his shirt on and nothing else. No shorts or underwear. He’d be walking around the dressing room trying to gee us up and we’d just be averting our gaze and thinking: “Bloody hell.” It was more than a little off-putting – he had loads of these weird superstitions."

LOL!!
If you did that today, social services would come banging on your door. Classic!  :D
