Title: Fixed Wheel Challenge Log
Post by: Chris S on 27 September, 2009, 06:12:27 pm
Well, if RRTY can have one, why not FWC? I know this means some of you nutters will have to log every ride here. Well, nobody's forcing you I guess...

2008/2009: 17

2009/2010:
Upper Thames 200 - 2
Tinsel Lanes 200 - 2

IIRC it'll be my usual 8 points again this year from 4 winter 200s, Nov-Feb inc.

Total: 56

If I did a DIY 400 in October I could get a second SRfixed but I doubt I'll have time.

Tinsel Lanes 200 (2)
DIY 200 (2)
Hopey New Year 100 (2.75)
DIY 200 (2)
Cambrian 200 (5.75)
Elenith 300 (7.75)
Brevet Cymru 400 (4)

Irish Mail 400 (9.5)
Clwydian Horseshoe 200 (5.25)
LEL 1400 (14)
East Mids Forests 200 (2)
Autumn in the Peak 120 (3.5)
DIY 300 (3)*

Total 74.75
2 x SFW: 1 SR, 20+ AAA pts.

*Yesterday, my first geared audax since July last year. :o

My list is on the AUK results list, but if you add on my 17AAA points (another 8.25 for the not yet validated Hellfire 600) and the 2 600k permanents, then it adds up to 84 points.
I most likely wont ride another event this season, so if you do a few good rides, we might have a new name on the fixed wheel award.

If it helps, I'll do it on gears, just for a challenge.

It's a trick question (ok, it's a badly phrased question).

There's nothing stopping you doing such a ride, but the question is better asked as; were you to do such a ride which year would the points be assigned to, this or next?

What about a 600 where you do equal riding on both Oct 31st and Nov 1st?
What about a 400 on October 31st that you finish at 8am on Nov 1st?
What about a 300 on October 31st that you finish at 12:01am on Nov 1st?

Actualy, it's in the rules somewhere. I can't remember now, but it is in the rules.

If the rules are the same as for RRTY, then you could choose which season to allocate your points (and obviously not both). More pertinent for the FWC is that the Richard and the committee need the results as soon as possible if they are to be awarded in time for the AGM. A leisurely 2600km ride is likely to be too late.

I remember seeing something about rides, or parts of rides, qualifying for different RRTY months, but not for AUK 'seasons' in general.

My Search-fu fails me too.

Yes - I was reinterpreting RRTY "rules" for FWC purposes. I think the ins and outs are explained on Mike Wigley's RRTY site.

My current list (and unlikey to change before the end of the season as work has got in the way of real life):

Upper Thames (2)
Marlborough Connection (2)
Brazier's Run (1)
Springtime 200 (2)
Up The Uts (2)
The Dean (3)
DIY 200 (2)
Brevet Cymru (4)
Brian Chapman (14.25)
Rural South (3)
Suburban Breakout (1)
LEL (14)

Total 50.25

It's a pity the Brevet Cymru doesn't have any AAAs this year, as the identical route used to have them.

Just the same with me - only 2 points this year, though quite a few more than that last year. For various reasons I've only actually done 2 audaxes this year, one of which was on a geared bike. Though maybe I could squeeze in a DIY before the end of the season...

A SFWC and on track for Randonneur 5000. Just one BP and the only AAA scoring event was the BCM, not that I'm dodging AAAs as I'm going to route check the Mid Sussex Hilly with Martin as a 200km DIY riding from home. Hmm, must be feeling a bit fitter, last year I packed at 50km...

Don't be so sure, now that the 50% rule applies to all of the trophy awards, as was confirmed and written in the rules at an AGM, not that many years ago. Most of my points have been collected via permanents.
I haven't done the maths or checked any other riders, but I'm not convinced that my name will be on the AUK fixed wheel award this year. ;)

I believe the FWC is not an "official" AUK trophy (i.e. listed in the regs) and so is not subject to the 50% rule.  May be wrong though.

*checks PDF*

It is in the handbook, and in the Hall Of Fame listings (p39).

50% rule can't count for the FWC challenge (or didn't in the past). Steve's score of 394.75 points in 2007 is evidence of that.

He got 3.75AAA that year so the other 391 points must have been from "distance" points, of which he "only" got 70 points from calendar events, the rest were from perms. If the 50% rule had applied he could only have scored 70+70+3.75 = 143.75 points, and slightly less since at least one of his calendar rides wasn't on fixed (PBP onna triplet tandem, and one other 200 it looks like).

If the rules have changed since then, then it pretty much makes it impossible to match Steve's score of 394.75.

I meant to write the trophy is not listed in the regulations (the handbook is irrelevant) and so is exempt from the 50% rule.  Likewise things like the tandem award etc.

You might be right there.
Ah well, we'll find out in November.

It's still just as possible, regardless of the 50% rule. It just might mean that you don't get the award for it. Same as my 405 points is impossible to match as a championship points total, because there aren't enough events to comply with the 50% rule. Come to think of it, there aren't for the FWC either, if it's needed.
The 505 rule being brought in across the board was biought in last year I think. But as you say, the FWC may not be included because it's not an AUK award.

I dunno?

And yes, I rode Cheltenham Flyer 200 and PBP on a geared and freewheel bearing tandem (not a triplet, that was 2003) with Nigel Winter.

But with the new, higher, AAA points then it might be possible for the FWC. The Bryan Chapman (Scenic) is worth 14.5 FWC and the Mille Cymru is worth 23.75 FWC. That's almost a tenth of the points needed in just two weekends. :)

Interesting thread.  The following message has just been posted on the AUK forum and is being copied here for anyone interested.

"As usual at this time of year as we slide seamlessly into a new season, I am writing to request all those who have achieved points on fixed wheel during the year just ending and who have not already done so, to let me have their points claims for that period. It will be helpful if you will add which rides have been done on fixed to enable me to confirm you are claiming everything to which you are entitled.  As ever, in case of query or difficulty, please contact me directly (off-list).  E-mail or snail mail is preferable; no need to send the card unless it needs validating – no point in risking these valuable items in the mail unnecessarily – especially at the moment.

To clarify the issue and avoid unnecessary queries, the 50% rule does NOT apply to the fixed wheel trophy, so the person with the greatest number of points will win the trophy.  Claims from female members will be especially welcome as very few of these have been seen recently.

In view of the limited time again this year between the end of the season and the prize-giving weekend, please send these figures promptly; if we don’t know about them by that weekend, another rider with a smaller total may receive the prize, which would be really, really galling.  This urgency also applies to members riding end of season permanents who should submit their cards promptly to their organiser.  (I would expect that as of last weekend, John Ward, the Perms Sec would have been as up to date as possible.)

At the same time, perhaps riders of other “niche” machines (tandems, upright trikes and recumbents) would do the same, sending their figures to Nev Holgate  [nev.holgate<at>talktalk.net]

Equally, Mike Wigley would like to see your RRTY claims for inclusion in the next Handbook, as these also need manual inspection, so drop him a line if you have an update, or, indeed, any query about the organisation of that award.

Thanks in advance for your co-operation and assistance."

To clarify further, any event starting on 31st Oct and finishing on a subsequent day will be allocated to the earlier season, so you may just have time for a last minute Perm....

Any results mentioned upthread will be checked and acknowledged by PM in the next few days, with any queries.  If you don't see anything, that probbably means it has been discounted as having insufficient details, so by all means check.

Don't stop pedalling!

The regs say you need 15 FWC points to be guaranteed to be listed in the handbook, but as long as the world and his dog doesn't start riding fixed Audaxes then you've a good change of being listed with fewer points than that. The lowest entry last year was 5 FWC points.

I'm still on my first FWC booklet, and it's unlikely to get filled in the next year. It's got enough boxes for 50 Audaxes or so. I don't bother sending it off at the end of each Audax year as it's all done on trust anyway. I just make it easy for me to spot the boundaries between different Audax years.

It might be worth buying one now and adding the Mildenhall 300 yourself (I self sign all of my DIY entries anyway).

If you're going for a Super Fixed Wheel Award then you do need a new SFW card each year. I send mine off my completed one with an SAE and a cheque for another one for the following year. I should get around to doing that in the next couple of days.

Oh go on. I'd seriously consider the MSG on fixed having done it once on gears and having had the MIB round to wipe away all of the memories of the steep climbs.

Though the FWC is (in my view) easier overall than the MSG 300, its individual climbs are harder.  Two of them already defeat me on a 29" gear with a carbon bike.

But if I continue to improve then maybe one day I'll be able to get up those two climbs.  And how will I know if I don't try?

But I am certain they will always be beyond me on fixed, as would be Honister and Newlands and possible Whinlatter also.

It would be pointless.

Tinsel Lanes 200 - 2
Rutland and beyond 100 - 1

(This is not a submission.)

2 FWC points last year (The Upper Thames which I'm pretty sure I did on fixed).

My two other Audaxes of 2009/2010 were Taste Of The Test 200 and Snowdon & Coast 400 and I did both of those on gears so I could get the PowerTap data...

A PowerTap track hub should help increase the numbers for the 2010/2011 season although it won't be going down to the K&SW...

I've been knocked off my perch this year. Good to see someone else getting the miles in on fixed. Glad that he rode more AUK miles than me and didn't just get it by AAA points (I don't think they should count) but good to see that he did some hilly rides on fixed.
Good to have another FWC rider and even better to have a new name on the AUK award.

Well done Mike.

Like I said above. Good to have another fixed wheeler and also to have another name on an AUK award. Even better that you issa lay-dee because we don't have many that ride fixed. 20 points is very worth when you see what has been done before by others. You beat me, Chris.  I got 62.25 points - I'd have had more, but I stopped in August.  Dammit.

I was surprised at the total  - you tot up FWC points remarkably quickly when you ride AAA events.

20 for 2009/10

I'd quite like some competition this year please. I'll never be challenging the boys, so another lady or two to chase might be nice.

LindaG has just bought a FW bike - and has just ridden her first 200k.

Just sayin'.

I have 10 or 12, I'm not submitting a claim because I can't be sure, keep forgetting to complete my FWC card, few were on calendar events and I'll not be challenging anyone anyway.

2 this year so far

I've hardly touched the fixed this year. Just a couple, possibly three, local 200s.

Interestingly I have had folk asking me to sign their FWC cards for DIYs or permanents. As far as I can see, self-certification is the only possibility is that case, unless I'm expected to position myself somewhere along the route, secret-control fashion, with a camera.

(This is not a submission.)

2 FWC points last year (The Upper Thames which I'm pretty sure I did on fixed).

I equalled your impressive tally of 2 points.

Richard has made a note of my claim, but did kindly manage my expectations by pointing out that he didn't think I'd be in the running for the trophy.

I only realised after receiving the FWC card that the SFW award has to be entered separately.

So now I needs to get one of those cards too.

I need to choose my rides carefully.  I'm thinking:

DIY 200k to Harwich and back.  Or maybe Up the Uts.
The Dean 300k.
Brevet Cymru 400k.  Easier than the Irish Mail, innit?  Or is it.

Then I have to work out which 600k.  I've already entered the K&SW and the Offa's Dyke.  Both of those sound like hard work on fixed.

So it'll have to be the BCM or the Border Raid.

Should I add this to the 2011 goals thread?  :hand:

Yes. Much easier. I'm going for the Irish Mail and the Border Raid.

An unplanned SFW and 27 points for me.

Geared bike has been stuck in the garage since May.

Being a numpty, I cannot find the website that tells me how to buy the cards logging the audax rides I've done on fixed. Or the card for recording a fixed SR. Can someone point me in the right direction? Ta.

Look in the handbook, which is in PDF form on the website.

You'd better ride less on fixed then ...
I'll have trouble even chasing 20 points.  My original, more modest plan was for about, er, 8.
Will see what the weather is in Dec anyway, my Nov ride will include gears.

Before this goes any further, I'd like to point something out:
various well-known female AUKs routinely ride further-n-faster than most of the boys.
And Boab (on fixed) finished before many boys (and men) on Saturday.

So unless you want to split all the competitions, and have different easier time limits for the allegedly slower gender, well ... hopefully you get my drift.

Tossing my hat into this years ring, although not as a serious points chaser. Going to do my first Fixed Wheel audax tomorrow by doing the Goodbye Yorkshire Christmas Pud 100k from Thorne.

Slight problem being that I haven't yet registered for FWC as I didn't really think about it until yesterday. Is there any way that I can claim restrospectively for this ride once I've registered. Also doing the ride as ECE. Can ECE portions be claimed as well? The pdf says you need to have the organisers validation after the ride, which there won't be as the organiser will be sat at home laughing at my folly by the time I finish my bit.

Will start making progress into an SR as well, although not sure how far I'll get with that.

Yes, once you recieve your FWC card you could ask the organiser to stamp/sign it and return by post.  I have done this a few times in the past after forgetting to hand in my card because of exitement at finnishing and/or extreme fatigue

I am not sure about the ECE bit - I would have thought that this is taken on trust - similar to completeing a fixed DIY

best,
J
