$400 for a Cervelo R3?
« on: 16 August, 2010, 02:19:54 pm »
Neighbour came round last night, so I gave him a tour of the house. We had just moved in. Took him down to the bike den in the basement, and showed him my super trainer, bike stuff, and there waiting to be ridden was my Cervelo R3.

Told him to pick it up, a party piece of mine.

"Wow he said, that's like a feather",

So I told him it weighed 7kg, but then he had to ruin it when he said,
"How much would that cost? $400?"

$400 FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did he stay upright when you told him the actual price?

He was surprised but he later told me that he tried to buy a cello that cost $200,000! He's a professional musician!

Some cello yes, apparently 300 years old, but I like to think my bike is some Cervelo!

But will it have held its value as well in 300 years?

There's probably no reason a carbon fibre cello can't last that long, by which time it should have a good provenance.

That's the thing, innit?  Those of us who don't know about musical instruments are staggered by their cost.  People who don't know about bikes are staggered by their cost.  The abundance of fifty-quid supermarket bike-shaped-objects doesn't exactly help the education.

Similarly you can pick up a brand new violin for under 50 quid

You'd struggle to get even a remotely decent cello for less than 1000quid.
You can get cheap Chinese ones, that'll work long enough for you to decide whether to continue to play or not, in the 3-500pound bracket, after that it quickly jumps up to 12-1500 for an entry level cello....and then it only goes up from there.

I wish I had time to play, but I sold mine (cheap one) when I moved from London, as I simply couldn't commit the 2-3 nights a week I needed in order to really get anywhere.
