Anyone had Baked Alaska recently?

(Me - no, don't think I've ever tried it.)
And was it served up in a bin?
I can't for the life of me think why this question comes to my mind just now.... ;D

I remember being intrigued by it when I was little, but I don't like meringue so I wouldn't bother. I'm enjoying the Bake Off drama llamas though.

I was always more interested in the Reverse Baked Alaska which was used a demo of the microwave when it first became popular. I liked the science of it.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Ah yes - Nicholas Kurti, the renowned physicist, specialist in cryogenics - and one of my mentors when I was a lowly student.  He it was who demonstrated how to bake an inside-out Alaska in the microwave: frozen on the outside, hot in the middle.  Would that work with a modern microwave with its better design more evenly distributed field I wonder?

I remember, back in those days, going to a conference at which Kurti played a leading part, and the lavish conference dinner we were dished up.  I recall skipping the dessert and making a hasty exit, I think because I was feeling unwell.  I was afterwards told that what I'd missed was - you guessed it - baked Alaska!  Presumably the normal type, cold in the middle.

I still haven't tried it.

It was a favourite pudding in our family when I was young. I believe we made it a few times after getting married, too.

I will open negotiations for our next Sunday lunch...
