Draw runner alignment

I want to install some vertical draws into a shelf unit. How much of a bad idea would it be to just mount normal draw runners 90° to their normal intended orientation, and just carry on as before? Will this dramatically effect their operation? They won't be heavily loaded.

The runners I'm looking at have a rated load of 45kg.

Trying to imagine what needs to be done vertically, do you mean over-and-under sliders, or something that moves up and down?

If it's over-and-unders, the lower runner will be fine, but the upper won't like being pulled apart. Make sure there's not much slack between drawer and runners.

I think, if they’re the type of runner where in normal installation, you’re able to pull the drawer right out then lift up the front to remove it, they wouldn’t work vertically. They rely on the weight of the drawer to operate correctly.

Something like this.

QG  in your  example video the upper, load bearing slide is  vertical, and  the  lower one horizontal - I suppose at the top you could add a second slide   - good luck getting them all to engage though !

As ever a drawing would have been far more informative than all the workshop and tool porn

My take on this would be to install 2 runner units at the bottom of the "drawer box" - at the edges, and one in the centre at the top - that way you would get greater stability, more support and and less pressure than on just a single rail at the bottom.  Something like these for runners   https://www.screwfix.com/p/ball-bearing-drawer-slides-350mm-2-pack/1590r  in whatever depth/length you need.

I'm working on a plan to have some vertical sliding/pull-out drawers/tool panels in my workshop and am looking at the method I'm suggesting - be interested to see how you get on as I'm a while away from this project.

It's about half-way down a load of tool storage options - some of these woodworkers in the US must spend more time making/organising the workshop than actually making anything!
