I am ill for the first time in almost a year, leg injuries notwithstanding.

I got home from hols yesterday and about 6 hours later the old razor blade appeared in my throat and I now have the dreaded creeping flesh. I will phone my schools in a moment and tell them I'm not coming. The trouble is that we are also supposed to be looking after grandson tomorrow and that's going to be difficult. Mrs. Wow has similar symptoms to myself.

I hope s-i-l's parents can cover for us. I feel dreadful.

Our Maidstone trip has ben cancelled and t'other GPs are covering. I thought I was feeling better at lunchtime but I feel lousy again now. There might be a Laphroaig at bed time.

Feeling worse if anything. If I had the energy I'd be grumpy.

The dreams associated with this bloody illness are the weirdest ever. I am being driven aimlessly around a French landscape, but with great urgency. When I wake up, which seems to be every hour or so, nothing happens. I make myself have a drink of water and the moment I try to go back to sleep, we are off again. I feel like one of the little dots of light on Jo's map demonstrating London hire bike usage. The annoying part is that the sensation doesn't even stop when I decide to relieve the monotony by going for a crap. My fevered brain just won't switch off.

Sod it, I think I will make a cup of tea.

Is there any evidence, I wonder, of the efficacious effect of a really hot curry on an infected throat? I've just had one and it has made me feel lots better.

I do not know BUT I'd guess two mechanisms in which a hot curry might be helpful.
1) The spiciness might activate the pain 'gate' and reduce the sensation of throat pain.
2) Induced sweating might bring down your fever.

This is pure educated guesswork.

The 'gate' theory of pain is a thing.
Gustatory sweating is a thing

When I worked at HMCE, one morning my throat developed a great soreness and a fever was upon me. One chap I worked with, one Phil Townsend, decided that this needed to be nipped in the bud so he suggested a curry lunch in which I had the hottest curry on the menu, along with chilli pickle, and afterwards had a large single malt.

Such was the culinary onslaught on that occasion that it cut short any thought my body might have had of incubating an infection and on every exhalation you could almost make out the microbial white flags being waved.

Once met a bloke in a pub in Germany who used to be a chef somewhere in the far east who swore by eating a whole raw chili at the onset of cold symptom. Never tried it.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Not so much for throats (though curry is the sort of food that's non-abrasive, which is desirable with a sore throat), but hot curry is my go-to solution for congestion.  The effect is sadly temporary, but at least it tastes like food while you're eating it.

Glad I'm not reliant on contct lenses.

Hmm, been prescribed low-dose amitriptyline, not for depression, for migraine-y pain. That's going to be interesting.

Mrs Ham has been going with this for several months for back pain, not happy at all, visiting doctor to talk about stopping.

It seems I'm embarking on 'diagnosis by treating symptoms with drugs'. If the amitriptyline doesn't work, they want to try beta-blockers.

Blimey there is a coincidence, I was talking to my aunt today (for the first time in over a year) and she has the same.

Treatable with steroids, so they say.

I came across this article. It almost made me cry, knowing I'm not alone or going insane.

Great find there, it helped me to try and cope with the "Big Ones" after nearly 20 years of distress.

y' might be going insane as well I suppose?
