Digging out a gigantic brier...episode one last week, episode two this, probably three, four and five  to come. It was the mad rootstock of a loganberry-gone-feral that we transplanted (fools that we were!) when we moved out here from Oxford. Now it's hellbent on taking over the planet.

Switching to 'winter' set up (and I ought to be outside doing stuff not in here typing!).
Cold frames are now where the outdoor tomatoes were this morning.
Said frames have seed trays and modules for sweet peas and other flowers, and MrsC's collection of auriculas.
I don't know where the strawberries I potted up the other week are going to spend the winter!
Maybe another cold frame is called for?

Dug up some raspberry canes and put some chippings down for paths.

Scrounged some wood to make some cold frames, already have the glass.

Cleared much of the allotment. replaced oil, spark plug & starter cord on rotovator and turned over all clear ground. Had bonfire with weeds & hedge trimmings.

Took 2 large pumpkins to the pub as they are making pumpkin soup for Halloween.  :smug:

Nice pumpkins WJ!! Am trying to eradicate the bind weed on my plot and it is amongst the raspberry canes I inherited. I cut the canes down last year so will have a crop next, but am not sure if I shall keep them after that as the bindweed is so tied up with them I'll never really get rid of it unless I hoik all the canes out. Spent some time today excavating around the canes but there is still lots there.

Anyway, off to watch Colditz now.

Picked our last squash... and really it's getting too cold to do much else here now. It's not yet hit minus double figures yet, but I'm sure it won't be long.

Yesterday was spent digging over another couple of chunks of the allotment.  Only about 1/6th left to do now...

My onions and garlic are coming on well.  Mr R's parsnips need thinning (again) and the radishes are still going strong.

spent a happy morning on saturday spreading the old compost heap about the patch.  Probably about a ton gone in so far, with more to follow.

I'm going to leave planting till the spring, so it's just a few leeks, chard and radishes to look forward to through the winter.

Spread a load of manure over most of the plot.
Tidied up the pallets I seem to have accumulated.
Replaced some of the broken and rotten pieces on my bench with bits from the pallets.
Hammered in some metal posts to help support the raspberry canes.
Made a wooden box, four pallets. Plan is to fill with manure/ compost and plant pumpkins in next year.

Hmmm.... where can I get some pallets?

I want some for a wood supply on the allotment - but all the pallets I see tend to be jealously guarded by their owners.  I know the blue ones are worth money.

I just keep my eyes open for builders doing extensions and the like. They always let me take them.
My local garden centre often has pallets (and other bits of fencing, posts etc) which they are only too glad to get rid of.
As you say, the blue ones can't be taken.

I've decided the last part of the allotment will be the 'soft fruit' area.

It has been dug over and a blackberry planted.  Next week some raspberries, a gooseberry and a blackcurrant will go in.  Space will be kept for strawberries.

Here's a quick summary of some of the results from the new veggie patch (all my wife's doing.  I build the raised beds and she grows stuff in them).

She's been busy up there all autumn so there should be some nice surprises in spring and summer 2011

Last part of the allotment dug over today.

Cleared the last of the radishes from Mr R's part of the plot and dumped them on the compost heap.  He needs to sort out his parsnips as well.  His winter greens and cabbages have been decimated as he was too lazy to net them.   ::-)

Raked leaves from the drive.

Re-planned majorly revised garden layout; including area for coppice to power biomass heating and removal of tree to create shadeless area for solar panels. Have yet to get final quotes and work out returns on investment but we could be heating towards negligable heating bills.

I've planted a couple of David Austin Heritage English Climbing Roses in the back garden today.  I'm going to train them along the back fence.

I've also purchased some fruit bushes for the allotment: early, mid and late season raspberries, a blackcurrant, a whitecurrant and a gooseberry bush.  They'll all be planted up tomorrow (weather permitting).

Sown, in the unheated greenhouse, today; broadbeans, cabbage, sweet peas, winter salad leaves.
Covered one deepbed with polythene sheet to keep off the rain ready for erection of giant cloche next month for early pots to harvest in mid/ late May. Bought seed pots yeaterday fron a nersery with a choice of 50 varieties, but some, especially the salad varieties, were selling out.
Managed to stand up the plastic 200 gallon water butt after the ice had distorted it so much at the bottom that it was in danger of toppling into the greenhouse and I had to push it over the other way. It has taken 3 weeks to thaw the ice so that I could lift it back onto it's stand.
It's good to get on the plot now the weather is mild and there is a promise of spring, but not for a couple of months yet.
