Trying to find my bottle of clove oil. As it is brushing my teeth and taking paracetamol has deadened it.

I found my old Commodore 64, with its tape player and joystick. There's only one programme tape in the box - the original Star Wars arcade game.

If my mate keeps his promise to drop off his old telly on Saturday I'm going to get sod-all done this weekend.
Bloody old telly didn't work

So, took the plunge over the weekend (because birthday) and bought a Kindle.

Being thrifty/ a tight git (delete as appropriate) I got a grade A paperwhite from CEX for £72. bargain.

Got home and went to register.

Kindle says No.

Phoned Kindle support. It is registered as lost/ stolen.

Bugger. I am a crim.

The irony  . . .

You surely should be able to get a refund from CEX.

A dead pigeon the size of an eagle on my doorstep when I got in tonight.

WTF?!

Watch out - There's an eagle the size of a slightly larger eagle lurking in the bushes!

Already contacted CEX and will be returning the goods tomorrow.

I think their testing regime should include trying to register Kindles.

I seem to be unable to find an up-to-date tariff chart for taxis in London online.
I don't want fucking sample fares.

Is the table on page 12 of this any good?

Dear the BBC

I am not interested in The Great British Bake-Off and humbly request that you stop it; also take the tristram who came up with the Sound Of Music adverty-thing and hurl them against the Eiger Nordwand with a trebuchet.

Thank you.

A warning as much as a grumble:

Don't order online from John Lewis and opt to collect from store if paying by PayPal if you don't have a readily available passport or driving licence for photo ID.  That's what they demand.

They should not assume everyone has such documents.  (My Mum doesn't at all, for example, and I don't at the moment as my passport is mislaid).  There wasn't even a warning before ordering, and cancelling isn't an automated process, so quite some inconvenience you will have.

It does say in their Ts&Cs that that's what they want.

However, it also says that someone else could collect it, showing *their* photo ID, or that if you don't collect it within a week, it'll be cancelled and refunded automatically.

Quote from: John Lewis
If you've paid entirely by PayPal or gift vouchers, then please bring a photo ID, which must be your passport or photo driving licence. [...]

We're happy for someone else to collect your order, but to prevent fraud the person you've nominated must present your order number and their photo ID (passport or photo driving licence).

Your order will be available for collection at your chosen shop for 7 days, after which it will be returned to our warehouse and your account will be refunded, but please allow up to 2 weeks for this.

Ok, but no-one really reads the t&cs before ordering.

I won't trouble anyone else to collect for me.  I've emailed customer services to cancel immediately.  Perhaps I could pay directly by card instead (for which they don't ask photo ID), but I don't feel like giving them my custom at the moment.

Ironically, one reason I ordered from John Lewis rather than a cheaper source was for good service.  Requiring photo ID for a purchase is not what I call good service.  You can even "click and collect" drugs from Boots with nothing but an order number at collection.

Then Boots isn't very secure is it? Or maybe they figure that OTC drugs aren't a likely target for theft.

Security has to be balanced with convenience.  Boots has the balance right for me.  Requiring photo ID is excessive security for a simple purchase.

Let me have my grumble!

Actually I think Boots ask to see a copy the order confirmation webpage/email rather than just the number.  No-one else will guess my nine-digit number anyway.

the John Lewis click and collect normally requires the order number and the payment card. If the payment is by a means other than card then I can understand wanting some other proof of ID.

For PayPal, they specifically want passport or driving licence only, which is unreasonable as well as grossly excessive considering that not everyone has it.

Try Evans click and collect, photo ID, card paid with and a copy the email order confirmation........and the first question is........"have you got an email address?"

You might not think asking for photo ID is good service, but I wouldn't criticise them for it, especially as it's only relevant to Paypal or gift voucher transactions - seems fairly reasonable to me. I do carry my driving licence in my wallet though, so I wouldn't have objected even if the request to show it had been a surprise.

I do tend to read the small print with online orders though, especially around documents needed for things like picking up goods, collecting hire cars or taking flights.

Well, I am criticising them for it.  It's especially bad not to include a prominent warning before ordering.

The main point is:  Not everyone even has a driving license or passport!
