Title: Winged Wheels
Post by: clarion on 01 September, 2009, 11:15:28 pm
I thought we had a thread about this already, but my Search Fu is not strong enough, so here goes:

At Mount Pleasant Farm campsite, Stewkeley, we saw this.  I'm guessing bought in rather than 'awarded', but it's a winged wheel, nonetheless.

There was a cool sign for Butterfly, too:

That fungus looks nice 'n' cosy.

There was a derelict petrol garage not far from my home a few years back where I liberated a nice enamel sign of Bibendum.

Not in it's original location, this one was spotted on the fence at someone house in Scotland. The house was used for a control on Ower The Edge and Oot Ta Carrick. The owners put on a splendid spread and were very very good hosts and controllers, obviously keen cyclists.

CTC is trying to quietly forget the winged wheel in favour of the newer logo.  However, it is being kept alive by a few stalwarts - plus if CTC wants to use its powers to erect road signs, they have to bear the winged wheel symbol.

You can get cloth badges with tee winged wheel on them - but not from CTC directly.  I don't think they produce the winged wheel version of the 'Cyclists Welcome' signs/stickers any more.

It was on that street that John Harwood was assaulted on the Bryan Chapman a few years ago.

And here it is circa 1875, before it got its CTC sign. I wouldn't fancy running the gauntlet of this ugly bunch.

I made a point of explaining to the landlord what he had on his wall and how it might be nice if he looked after it.  He was quite busy so it was difficult to gauge his response.

Not a bad idea although I dread to think what would be on the signs. Currently the only way we leave our mark is having a nocturnal wee in the ford at Terling.

Post by: Cudzoziemiec on 28 November, 2011, 09:15:36 pm
I think that's an idea with a certain panache and utility together. For instance, some metal plaques to the same design as our badges. But I expect that would cost a lot more than badges! And persuading cafes, hostelries, even bike shops to display them might not be as easy as in days of yore. Finally, would they require planning permission? Much easier and cheaper, even though not so classy or long-lived, to produce stickers.

Isnt it hugely sad that the CTC does not place any value on these things any more?
Title: Re: Winged Wheels
Post by: Cudzoziemiec on 28 November, 2011, 09:35:26 pm
Indeed it is. It's also sad that we all, generally, don't value old signs much. I'm thinking of, for instance, old painted advertisements you see on shop walls. Those are difficult to preserve but Winged Wheels are a part of social history.

I wonder what the AA's attitude is to the old black and yellow "Safety first, 102 3/4 miles to London" signs you still see on old garages and hotels?

There were posts upthread about the CTC trying to quietly forget about the Winged Wheel.

So how come it's on the cover of Cycle magazine? Looks like the original one, too, rather than the redesign of 1990-odd.

I am proud to say I have a winged wheel cloth badge stitched to my Carradice Barley.  I bought the badge from the CTC during my first cycling career which was at it's height during the mid to late 1980s.

Isn't it about time to move on from the logo debate? I enjoy seeing everyone's posts of the historical plaques, but I don't hanker for a bygone era's logo.

SpaceBadger, I think most of the posters on this thread would argue that it isn't a bygone era.  It wasn't broken, so didn't need fixing.
Title: Re: Winged Wheels
Post by: mcshroom on 03 June, 2012, 05:56:23 pm
SpaceBadger, IMHO the more dated of the two logos is the lower case blue and yellow one that was brought in to replace the flying wings. It looks like a logo designed in the early 90s with it's curved rectangle shape and Gill Sans typeface, and really needs refreshing if that's what the CTC are going to use. It is starting to look amateurish.

OTOH, the winged wheel is a classic design and holds it's place well compared to modern designes because it didn't try to be trendy, meaning it doesn't look like last season's fashion.

Added to that, the winged wheel is a much better candidate for single colour printing, allowing much easier corporate branding.

The winged wheel looks as if it was originally drawn by someone who knew what a wheel is, what wings are, and was not drunk at the time. The blue and yellow sign looks as much like a real bike as some of the more extreme signs painted on the road by council workers.

I appreciate that its horses for courses as to who likes what. It's my impression that the logo debate is more a representation of those who wish that it was still the "Cyclists Touring Club" i.e. exclusively for cycle tourists, rather than the rather more broadly appealing cyclists organisation (let's not go there re. the charity debate). As this in danger of going way OT, I'll call it a day here with a thanks to everyone who has posted a great winged wheel picture. Keep 'em coming  :)

The Castle, Hurst, just to the east of Reading.

Destination for the Reading CTC Wednesday evening rides last night. We drank them out of draught bitter, because none of the three ride leaders had told 'em we were coming, so the landlord hadn't got any more barrels ready for putting up. Next time, he's promised to make sure he has plenty on tap, as long as we let him know we're coming.

Original winged wheel, in original location.

My wife's aunt lives just down the road. I seem to always wind up the teenage map reader by calling that 'Kingsbury Bishops'

Some nice testing wee lanes indeed on the Blackdown ups.

Nice.  Lovely lanes round there.

After a while, riding on the Levels, you notice the subtle change in gradient that invariably reveals a settlement on what was probably once an island for most of the year.

I pass Darlaston Inn daily.
The one at Church Lawton is still there.
Those south of joglerville towards Lichfield  provide interest.

Barnet Cyclists had a presentation from two women who cycled from Ireland's End-to-End (Mizen Head to Malin Head) last Thursday.
They stayed at the Bantry Bay Hotel here http://goo.gl/maps/cR4gu (http://goo.gl/maps/cR4gu) and I spotted a Winged Wheel on their photo...

Staying at the Red Lion, Hillingdon, last week, there was an old photo in the bedroom showing the pub early 20th C with sign-written "Good accomodation [sic] for cyclists".  All vanished now.  I wish I'd taken a pic of it.

I can't help but think the CTC are missing a "vintage" marketing opportunity which would do no harm to their profile. I really must look out for these more. To be honest they're worth expressly including in the List description of any Listed Building and I wonder if they usually are ?

It's no surprise the CTC didn't choose Adair's Temperance Hotel but it would have been at least partly fitting if they'd chosen Hall's next door, seeing as it says (I think) The Tourist Hotel on the top floor. And could that diamond be an AA sign? Maybe too early for those?
